All the dogs are doing the Hank-doodle dance today.
Such great news.Go Hank.
Count us in....great news :groovy: :groovy: :groovy:

Just as an add on......Has you vet recommended a diet to increase his blood count. My lab friend had issues with her lab, due to bleeding post partum ( I know very different). Our vet told her to feed her dog lots of liver and spinach (green veggies). She was not given any iron or other supplements and together with her normal feeding the dog got better really quickly, even whilst feeding puppies

Just catching up on past posts and seeing this. So glad you got some answers and that Hank is recovering. What a scare for you!

Vaccinations can cause all sorts of reactions in some dogs. More and more vets are becoming aware of these problems and hopefully soon there will be some changes in the laws governing the frequency of rabie vaccinations.

No he hasn't recommended any special diet. Since he has gained back so much energy it's been crazy. I forgot how hyped up he can get. It's good to have him acting his old self.

You need to ask your vet for a letter...NOW..documenting why your dog should not have vaccinations for Rabies yearly. Unless you are in a really high risk area...I would be VERY hesitant about vaccinating again.

I carried the letter from my first Newf's vet in my wallet for nine years, just in case somebody at a dog park or out n'about questioned us. Have multiple copies made. If you license your dog, the license people may want a fresh letter from your vet for every renewal.

Hank got another CBC done today and his red blood cell count is up to 30% now so we can start weaning him off of the prednisone and hope he doesn't relapse.

So I was wondering what information exactly the bone biopsy gave your vet so that they were able to determine the problem was a result of the rabies vaccination vs something else?

Glad to hear he is doing better!!

Well they sent the sample off to a pathologist who ran the sample and said that the 4 times they ran it that it showed it was a hypersensitivity to a vaccination. The reason they believe it was the rabies specifically is because when he got his rabies vaccine a lump around a quarter size appeared at the injection site and stayed there for about a week and a half. The vet we used to go to (who gave him his vaccine) said to wait a couple of weeks and see if the lump went away, which it did. Also since he was still up and at it with his red blood cell count below 10% (normal is between 37-55%) it was chronic and not acute. They said his body just kept adjusting as his levels went down (his body was killing his red blood cells because of the sensitivity to the vaccine) but they got so low he couldn't keep his energy levels up anymore.
