Last night there was a tragic fire at Kloofbear kennels in Ct..Evelyn de Reus and Brian rushed out to save the dogs, but unfortunately they lost 4. Brian is recooperating at Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit, but is doing well..Evelyn was treated and released last night. Please keep them in your prayers..The amazing thing is they were able to save the rest of the dogs plus ten 8wk old puppies..One of those puppies(Stitch) has decided to come home with us,but she had to be taken to the Vetrinary hospital in West Hartford for oxygen therapy..Please keep little Stitch in your prayers also..

This is just heartbreaking for the de Reus family. Prayers for a quick and complete recovery. Little Stitch's welfare was one of my concerns, I'm sorry she's needed medical support and pray she and the other Kloofbear kids continue to improve. So sad for the 4 that passed.

If you go on the Kloofbear site, you can see pictures of this beautiful litter (11 puppies, blacks and landseers). In the most recent, the pups are 7 weeks old.

I'm so sorry that this has happened to such a wonderful family. I don't know Evelyn well, but she and I have talked in the past about bringing one of her puppies into our home, and she was kind, warm and welcoming. My thoughts and well wishes are with her and her family.

Kim,
Yes, you are correct..Sophie delivered 10 puppies on Sunday and mom/pups are safe and sound..They were welping in the basement of the house, which miraculously did not receive any damage.

I put this in the thread in The Rainbow Bridge section, but just in case it gets missed:

This is from Nessa's FB page:

"Many of y'all know I got my two beautiful, sweet dogs from the same breeder, a really lovely lady by the name of Evelyn Odfjell de Reus. Last night she suffered a terrible tragedy - a fire broke out at her farm and claimed the lives of four of her beloved dogs, and also injured Evelyn and very severely injured her husband Brian, who went into the fire to try and save the dogs he could. Evelyn ha...s been released from the hospital but Brian remains in critical but stable condition. Their very good friend Josette Parnis Chrystall has set up a temporary bank account in their honor to accept donations for Brian's hospital care and the care of the dogs who survived. If anyone can spare anything, I know how much it will be appreciated by Evelyn, Brian, and their family.

Josie's also working on setting up a PayPal account. I'll update this post with that information when it's available.

And if you've got a dog, Newf or not, give them a hug today in honor of the four who passed away last night. You know I'm snuggling mine nonstop."

How awful. Evelyn was one of the first breeders I spoke to, when I was just starting to research Newfs. I am forever grateful for how generous she was with her time and knowledge, helping me decide if a Newf was right for my family.

The latest I've heard is that her hubby, Brian (who is by all accounts, nothing short of a hero), is expected to remain in the burn unit for at least a week.

Evelyn was the first breeder I spoke with also and was very kind. Ironically my Maneen was sired by her Espen from Marcarpents Enchantee. I'm so very sorry to hear this and will make a donation too. I saw her daughter in the ring at the Canadian show on Saturday. Tragic news.

Thanks to everyone for their prayers and kind words for this tragic loss. Thank you to all that have cross-posted this thread and that have shared the news with their local clubs..as you can see from earlier comments a PayPal account has been set up.Little Stitch remains in the hospital with oxygen, hey did take her out for a short time, but she had some mild respiratory issues so she was placed back on oxygen..For those of you who do not know why she is called "Stitch" when she was born her mother bit the umbilical cord a little too hard and a small segment of her intestine was open,so Brian did what every retired vet would do and found needle and thread and placed a stitch to close the opening..Thhus she is called Stitch. So please continue to keep little Stitch in your prayers and hope she can come home very soon
