The Story of Bear

The person we purchased Bear from is a lying, tax evading back yard breeder!! The litter Bear was part of was an “accidental” litter. Since then I think there have been two more “accidental” litters with the latest with puppies being ready next month. This is a quote from the add “Father AKC reg champion show lines, eyes, heart, cystinuria cleared. long line of ofa. Mom ckc reg. heart eyes cystinuria cleared.” They are the same dogs that bred our Bear. However the two dogs do not reside in the same place and we were told by her that mom is not AKC because she was supposed to be spayed when she bought her and that is how she had Bears “accidental” litter at less than two years of age. This woman knows close to nothing about Newfoundland’s other than what $$$ she can make by putting little effort into the pups and selling them.

The pups were separated from mom at 5 weeks and were put outside in a kennel for the day while she went to work at 6 weeks old because she wanted the noisy pups out of her house. They had a kiddy pool to play and drink from. I cannot say for sure but I believe the dog food was dumped on the ground. We got a call a couple of days after we picked Bear to say all but one other of his mates had gotten sick and tested positive for Coccidia. That dog and Bear were picked up the same day, the others over the next day or so.

That brings me to pick up time-There were a few people that wanted Bear but we had already paid for him. We had a red collar on him from the time we picked him out that came off and was “accidentally” placed on the wrong pup. This resulted in a confusing visit between us and our pup when he was about 6 weeks old. The little bear with the red collar on him seemed to interact differently with us and there was this other pup that kept trying really hard to get our attention. That is when we went home and looked real close at the pictures we had taken and she admitted the collar had “accidentally” come off. Bear and the other dog that was picked up the same day were the only two that had regularly been visited by the new to be Newf parents. I can’t speak for the other owner but we picked Bear up a day early because she had called all the owners to let them know they could pick their pups up any time the next day but she would not be there. They would be outside in the kennel, just help yourself!!!!!!!

We have had some issues with Bear as a result of his first not quite 8 weeks of his life. He was one of the two biggest males and won all the puppy games. The prize, dominance! We have worked really hard to get Bear to the point we have. We did lots of reading to educating ourselves. I know so many people that would have given up and Bear would have been sold, hit by a car or sent to a shelter. This I’m afraid to say is what I believe will happen to some of the pups in her “accidental” litters.

When people inquire about where our dog came from and how much we paid for him, I give them the story of Bear. The length of course depends on the interest. But not before they understand this type of person is doing the wrong thing does the story end. Do we love Bear yes, should we have bought him from one of the people out to make a quick buck at the animals expense, NO. We tell them our next Newf will come from a breeder that cares about the breed and not the $$$$. Will the pup cost more, absolutely. But you will have less behavioral and health issues from someone who is looking out for the well being of the pups rather than thinking about how to make more net profit. I have to admit to myself, that I am also a reason they had more “accidental” litters as I am guilty of buying the first Newf pup they sold.

We had at least two maybe three other female Newf owners that asked what we paid and three or four sentences later wanted us to wait to have him neutered until after he had bred with their dog. That decided it! Bear has been neutered to prevent the spread of the worst disease the breed can face…the back yard breeder.

Thank you for realizing what the cost of BYBs are. Everyone who helps prevent is worth their weight in gold, for all the poor puppies with bad health and the future of the breed.

That is a heartbreaking story, I honestly don't know how they can do it. Too bad you can't find out who the breeder of the female is, maybe she could take her away from them for violating the agreement. If you have reason to believe she's not claiming them as income, or paying sales tax, turn her in. I know here in Idaho sales tax is collected on the sale of pets. As far as not getting the puppy you chose, can you really expect someone like that to be careful enough to care if she got the right tag back on the right pup. You had to notice when you were there to pick out your pup that things weren't right. You kind of got what you deserve for buying from them. I don't want to sound mean, but there were a lot of red flags from the start but you ignored them.

All true, you will not get an argument from me. My post was more out of frustration she is still having "accidental" puppies. We do make every effort to educate anyone who stops to pet Bear.

I'm sure Bear's Dad will not go that route again and I thank him for posting Bear's story. So, please don't start a war about what he should or should not have done. That type of discussion often doesn't go anywhere.

We picked out our pup when he was three weeks old, we also know better than this now. Things didn't seem bad at this point. It was around the 5 week mark red flags really started to go up and our pup was already paid for.

I am sure that the lure of those adorable puppies must be pretty strong. However, it has to be ignored if the byb is going to be stopped.

Can we make a thread that is something like Warning signs that you are dealing with a byb.

Perhaps it could be a sticky and would help people who come here looking for information. I know the sticky finding a good breeder is the same thing however this could be just the signs. It would not be as long and perhaps people would read it. Need to point out how to tell a byb from it's website.

Just throwing it out there.

Bear's Dad, I am curious how did you find the ad? Was it a web site? Since it was an "accidental" breeding, I assume she does not claim to be a kennel. Where did this accidental breeding take place? I'm just curious, hope you don't mind the questions.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience but I have to ask...did you research the breed before you bought? Did you know the difference between a back yard breeder/puppy mill vs a reputable breeder?

Did you visit the Newfoundland Club Of America web sight for accurate breed info?

I am trying to understand and comprehend why people are buying from situations like that.

Is it the cheaper price? Is it the availability when looking for a puppy? Surely there were many warning signs before you paid for the puppy?

Sorry Angela but who is starting a war!! I even said I didn't want to sound mean !!!! Holy cow it's getting that all you can do around here is read posts, if you can't add some constructive criticism, what's the point of having a forum. A war was farthest thing from my mind, I would have said this to my own family. Sorry I offended you Bears Dad, it was not intentional :).

One more thing...I understand Maine is a tough state now with regulating breeder's...you may want to contact someone from your area and report this type of breeding situation.

Thanks for your post. It may indeed make someone who doesn't know any better think twice. Hopefully your pup will have a long and healthy life despite questionable breeding.

we also have a byb dog called Beau and we rescued him at 5 1/2 months old. Now we had done a lot of research into breeders and questions to ask so we knew when we got him what we had. It has helped us to understand and help him learn what he should do and even though he sometimes goes in full on to greet other dogs most tolerate it.

Saying that despite all problems we have with him I wouldn't swap him for the best bred dog in the world as he needs us and he gives us back just as much.

I agree that more info needs to be advertised to help people but thank you for perservering with him as Bear like Beau is one of the lucky ones where from a poor start they get the oppurtunity to develop and be loved .

I dont knowif you have a contract with the byb but you could look at that and take it from there. We also need photos of Bear please

also another thing to say is congratulations on not breeding Bear, Beau cannot be neutered yet but we have also been approached and he will never be bred from either

Did you research the breed before you bought? Yes, always wanted a Newf.

Did you know the difference between a back yard breeder/puppy mill vs a reputable breeder? Yes, we were convincingly sold on the accidental litter and the sending the male to live somewhere until the female could be spayed story.

Did you visit the Newfoundland Club Of America web sight for accurate breed info? Yes.

Is it the availability when looking for a puppy? At the time we were not looking for a puppy. We drove by a sign and stopped to look.

In Maine it is not at all uncommon to drive by signs for animals for free or sale.

Is it the cheaper price? Yes the pups were sold for less money but the answer for us is no. If it had been a reputable breeding kennel we drove by and stopped, we would have paid that price. We were not looking for a deal.

(Edit) I also would like to add; Bear has been a member of our family for over a year now. We are not looking to do anything about our situation besides use it to educate others regarding where they get their pets. We are not going to get rid of him or return him for a refund. I am not offended by anyone's post and I do not want to cause an argument,
I was frustrated when I read the add this morning. We know now what we did wrong when we bought Bear, we learned our lesson. Bear is turning out to be one of the best dogs I have owned. As previously posted, all we can do is hope he continues to be healthy despite his questionable breeding. Thanks
