In the months leading up to finding my baby girl, I did a lot of research. Some of the information that I found just confused me because there was so much of it conflicted with what I had read elsewhere. Finding this forum has brought much needed clarity and support and it became so evident last night. I was at my local pet store picking up treats and new toys for Maya and found myself in a conversation with a Newf owner. She asked a multitude of questions and offered up some advice. Because of this forum, I know not to listen. She prefaced her suggestions with the fact that she has owned this breed for 15 years and currently owns three. The first recommendation was to not use a crate. She said that newfs should never be crated, it is borderline abusive. Second bit of advice, newfs don't need training, they train themselves. Thanks again.

Oh boy. The exact opposite of reality. Anybody who thinks a 150 # dog will not need training is asking for trouble. Training is the key to building a bond, learning together and opening doors to everything you want to do.

Crate -- done correctly, dog will love his crate, safe place. Necessary to train, does not mean one has to put the dog in crate for hours at a time, just that dog understands and accepts crate can be good thing. And is willing to quietly be in crate when and if appropriate.

A person with these attitudes obviously has not taken part in the dog training world.

Newf Net is an invaluable source of good information. I wish all the facebook conversations could be archived here. So much quicker to search and read with Newf Net's archival format.

never met one that trained itself yet- obviously hasnt had a pfh or a hellraiser.

with the crate mine hate it with a passion though I know others who love it so they are all different. what works for one doesnt work for others.

enjoy your bundle of fun and all the stages that go with it. this is one breed that is addictive, fun and a real rollercoaster ride of emotional responses

Self training dogs would be selling for $25,000. What a hoot. Don't even get me started on the crate business.

Poppy didn't get the memo. She loves loves loves her crate. When we leave the house, she goes in there of her own volition. She goes in off and on all day. We leave it open. When we leave home, we lock her in the crate. I know, but we used to do it when she was a pup, and now she insists. NO really. A while back I thought, "Oh, she's over 2, she doesn't NEED to be crated when we leave. So I told her we were leaving, and she headed to the crate and lied down. I didn't close the crate. I headed to the door, and she came out of the crate and LOOKED at me like I was nuts. I told her I didn't think she needed to be shut into the crate, I trusted her. She went over to the crate, went back in. I walked away. She came out of the crate again, went to the door and looked at me, because clearly I had lost my damn mind. So I went back over, following her, to the crate, and closed the door, but didn't lock it. Started to walk away. NOPE. She came out of the crate a third time, turned around, went back in and looked at me. She LIKES to have the crate locked when we are not home. She made that clear.

As for the training.... I am LMBO on the idea that newfs "train themselves." I think that woman had a selective memory.

At just about 12 weeks now, Maya is ruling the house. I can't imagine that things would be going very well in another 6 months with her throwing her weight around. I'll stick with what I know to be true and help her be the best dog she can be. I should have thought of asking her why she didn't have her clan with her if they were so well behaved without training. I guess I was too busy laughing.

You have learned more in the short time you have had your newf than she has in 15 years. It is refreshing to find those that do want to learn.

Ya, in one way agree. You never never ever use a crate as punishment. No way! Used appropriately they are great tools. I just took down Sam's crate as he is 9 1/2 yo and hasn't used it in over a year.

They train themselves, oh don't we wish!!!!!!
