Slippin' and Slidin'

Gracie is going on 10 and she is really having a tough time getting a grip on our hardwood floors. We've got rugs down all over the place, but twice in the last couple of days she has wakened me at 4 a.m. because she managed to get herself onto a spot where she couldn't get up. I really wanted to cry. She was barking a sad, pathetic little bark for help.
Has anyone used either bootees or the non-slip rosin spray they sell for dogs and if so, which worked better for your older dog?

Anne, I know it is so tough to see them go through this. Dunno, I suspect any type of rugs backed with rubber would help, whatever.

I have porcelain floors, with rubber backed large rugs covering the better part of the kitchen. Helps immensely, I think. Certainly, nothing fancy. Home Depot stuff. I don't have a fancy house, that's for sure!

My house looks awful too, I have many rubber backed mats everywhere for Gracie who actually hates them and would much prefer the cold floors!! I have never tried boots, she is such a fuss pot I am sure she would not tolerate them.

Never heard of non-slip rosin spray. I would be curious if it works. We have one room Snuffles has a hard time in. And of course if we had rugs, he would not lay on them anyway.

We have the same problem with Dexter and are getting the booties with the rubber grips for him. They seem to work well if the dogs leave them on.

Anne. I had mats EVERYWHERE and Murphy would find the one area where they didn't quite meet. I ended up pulling up the mats, the laminate and having wall to wall carpet laid. Expensive but worth it even though I prefer the look of haradwood or laminate.

I just broke down and bought 2 sets for when we go to the vets office...If you want to try before you buy, pm me. I only need them for the vets office visits, and we just had our annuals.

I have booties, my dogs don't love them. Zuzu actually hates them, Cooper tolerates them.

I also got Tacky Finger at Staples, it's the stuff that you use for counting money and puts just a little stick on your finger (or on the pad). I have not tried it yet but it was around $3 for a tub of it vs. $10 for the same thing from the pet store...

Elvis wears the same booties Mila does, and he's never had a problem with them. He did high step it when we first put them on him, but we got him outside and he quickly forgot they were there. Now he throws a fit if they're NOT on, but he's a bit of a prince like that.

Maggie has the same booties that Elvis and Mila have. They make a huge difference in helping her get up. We also have rubber backed carpet runners but those are only for walking - they are not acceptable to Maggie for sleeping, obviously.

She did the same as Elvis, stepped really high when she first had them on, but quickly forgot about them and now walks totally normal. I only put them on the back feet in the house, and do all 4 when we go to the vet or Petsmart, etc.

Amazon was the cheapest place I found.

Power Paws socks work great for indoors. http://woodrowwear.com/ You probably need one size less than you think to keep them snug. I got them for Tiika and they work great but they're a tiny bit big for her. I got her XXXl. She has huge paws. I measure 4inches across but she fits into the Ruffware XL Polar trek boots for ice and snow which are supposedly only 3.25inches wide. They were expensive but worth it as they replace Paw Magic or Musher's Secret which costs a lot more in Canada than in the US - and we need it a lot more!

I have rugs all over my house. But, what has really worked when Eden gets on the one spot where there isn't a rug, I have a really heavy duty rubber matt. I got it from Lowes. I take that matt and kind of put it over half of the top of her. What she knows to do is position her body in such a way that the matt goes under her and she has a good grasp now with her feet. So, when I hear her struggle, I get the matt over to her and that has worked out well.

been kind of busy but just wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions. We'll be working on this. Can't have my girl unhappy. Dave even nailed carpet on the deck stairs so she won't slip. Seems to be helping.

I used the grip booties on my 14 year old Newf during the last year of his life. They helped a lot. One caveat is that in my experience it is better not to leave them on 24/7 as they can rub and irritate at the top edge. I just took them off each night at bedtime, then put back on each morning and that was fine.

That is why we went to rough slate and rugs..not the most beautiful flooring, but good for older newfies...I hope the booties work

I'm glad someone resurrected this thread. Orca's begun to slide on the hardwood floors no matter how diligent I am about trimming his paws. I tried to put a sock on to see if it helped (it didn't) but he just kept trying to rip it off. So now I need to get an actual product for him but I don't want to spend $40 to have them destroyed within the day. Any advice?
