Post-TPLO Issues

We thought we were out of the woods, but it doesn't look that way.

When they brought Willis to us when he was ready to go home after surgery nearly three weeks ago, he started bleeding. They bandaged him and he dripped for a day or two, but that subsided. Mind you we have followed instructions to the letter: penned except potty breaks, using a sling, no excess activity, wearing a cone, etc. Then the huge seroma formed. I started warm compresses, religiously. I was concerned because the seroma had been there almost two weeks (size of half a tennis ball) and took him to see my local vet (surgeon is in another town) last Friday. She said the incision looked great, and because the big time swelling had gone down by the time we saw her, we were relieved. She gave us the all clear to start walking him.

We started walking him last Friday night. He was bearing weight on the leg and seeming to enjoy the walks. Monday he seemed a bit hesitant to go on the evening walk. Yesterday he seemed OK with the walks, but last night I noticed the weeping. It was mainly clear, with a slight blood tinge, but he was leaving big wet spots all over the sheet in his pen. It has no odor to it. This morning it's weeping and still slightly blood tinged. I call the surgeon and they want me to bring him in tomorrow. I call my local vet and see if there is something I should be doing in the meantime because I don't want to wait until tomorrow if something could be done to help now. They want to see him today to take temperature and start antibiotics.

I am a total and complete wreck. Anyone with experience able to give any advice? If no advice, please send us your good thoughts and pray that he will get through this.

No advice here, but you are doing all the right things to take care of your boy. He is lucky to have a mama that looks after him so closely. If it is, in fact, infected, you are doing everything that you can do! Hopefully he'll be on the mend very quickly. Hugs!!!

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry! Needing a TPLO is stressful enough that I can't imagine adding this on top of it.

I can only offer that I think it's a good thing that the drainage is clear - not yellow/green or anything. I'll be thinking of you guys!!

OH NO!!! Poor Willis :( I don't have any advice on the oozing. Hopefully it sounds worse than it is.
As for the walking, Millie was doing great a few weeks post op, and must have just twitched her leg the wrong way one day, and we pretty much went backwards a week or so. It SUCKED! I was a mess about it but she rested and then was walking well again after that.
Best of luck and keep us updated!!!

I know all dogs are different so I hate to compare, but I'm curious. Jessica, when you say Mille was doing great a few weeks post op, was she walking on the leg without lurching at 3 weeks out? Willis is putting weight on it, but still lurching/limping visibly. My neighbors are even commenting, "Oh, he's really limping" which isn't making me feel any better.

He's at the vet now. Dripping as we took him in. And the discharge is becoming yellow and stickier, but I'm hoping they can do something to help him. Looking on the bright side, he was really excited to be going somewhere in the car and happy to go into the vet's office :)

Thank you all so much for your well wishes and support. He has a slight fever and they are culturing to see what antibiotic will work, but it will take a few days to get it back so in the meantime they are using bactoderm on the incision. We are just going to be hoping this is not MRSA.

When vet tells me to keep stitch area cleansed because of drainage or puts in drain I use Hibiclens and use it for cleansing. I usually buy the generic brand in drug stores. If say to keep it clean soap and water may want to get some Hibiclens and use.

Some time ago when I had an accident, stitches, infection started, doctors were afraid mrsa until cultures came back wasn't, had me using Hibiclens for wound cleansing after opening up so could drain.

HMMMM... I would say probably about three weeks is when she was walking pretty great... But thats when she turned it the wrong way in an attempt to play (that was abruptly stopped) Then she was limping again for another week or so :( I was a mess!!! Keep in mind, Millie was so young. She had her first one done at 14 months old!!! She had youth on her side for sure. And you are right, every dog is different. My prayers are with you guys annd hop Willis is on the road to a speedy recovery! Hugs from me and Licks from Millie!!!

Jessica did Millie have TTA or TPLO?

Sorry to hear Willis is having trouble. Zu had several post op infections last year - do you know how to check his temp? That will give you some peace of mind or know you need to call.

One of the PTs we saw said that a lot of dogs showed dramatic improvement at 8-10weeks past TPLO, like a switch was flipped. So hang in there and know limping at this stage can be totally normal. If it gets worse, definitely check with the vet or surgeon.

Good luck!

Learning to take his temp is a priority now. I had a sense he was a tad warm but do need to know how to verify. I don't care if it takes weeks to heal, I just want him to heal successfully at this point! He seems better today, but this has certainly been a roller coaster ride so we are cautiously optimistic.

Bear is doing good with the knees (he had TPLO on both knees)...but now we have spinal cord issues...ugh.

If you go to the above video, it should link you with other videos from both of his surgeries. I believe one is 4 days out and one is 8 weeks out.

Good thoughts and prayers headed your way for a speedy recovery.
