There are no words to express how sorry I am for your situation. But what providence, that you weren't home at the time?! I wish I could help somehow, but alas, Illinois is a ways away from WV....

Wow! Glad you all are OK. Fortunately no one was home thank Dog! We will be saying a prayer for a good outcome.

I'm so sorry to hear about your home, but glad you and your pup were not there. We rent pet-friendly houses via VRBO.com when we're traveling. It looks like there is a place that might accept pets in Charleston: http://www.vrbo.com/379720. I don't know anything about it or know if they survived the storms, but that might be an option if you need a place to stay closer to home with your Newf. I would think the insurance company would reimburse you.

Not sure where you are in WV and it would be a bit of a hike, but we have a camper in Floyd, VA. on a pond and a creek. Pond would have to be checked for snapping turtles before Newf swims though. There is water and power, but no septic (we call and have them pump it out). You might check the distance. We'd be glad to have someone in it for a while, we haven't been there in 2 years.

I had a customer's whose house burnt. While it was being repaired their insurance company paid for the dog to be boarded here. I didn't have any trouble collecting the money. But I do think they have a limit on how much they pay for pet care as they told him, after 3 months, that they would no longer pay.

Yikes, I don't live in a stormy area but there are lots of huge trees that have a "lean" i the direction of my house and I sometimes wonder about what would happen if we were home during an earthquake that loosened them. I'm thankful that you're all okay. I don't know your history (good breeder, bad breeder, rescue, etc.), but in the case of good breeder - Are they close enough that they could have her stay while you are figuring things out?

Breeder is far away and her circumstances have changed a lot...would not ask her to do that. Gracie is currently in Maryland with my son and daughter in law...my 6 year old granddaughter loooves her and spends a lot of time with her so they are both happy. My insurance will pay for housing for me and dog for 12 months so my goal is to find a house to rent...there is a small possibility next door which would be perfect and the back yard is even fenced...or even put a decent sized camper on my own property...right now my priorities are to get the tree down and the inspectors in, including a structural engineer to verify that it shifted on the foundation...so we can scrap the house and start from scratch...otherwise, it will be always known as that house that was smashed and no one will ever want to buy it...like a car in a flood...It has been all over the news and had my name attached to it...Frontpage top left five column pic with 72 point headline or larger, don't remember, and hundreds of people driving by every day and gawking...You can see my point. My house and I have become very public persona...sometimes the media can be very intrusive...And I used to be a newspaper person.

Wow, that tree was huge!! You had angels watching over you, that's for sure! I hope you are able to get things moving soon.

Later on when you're ready and if you need it, my parents use a really good handyman. He's totally trustworthy and literally can do just about anything. He's been helping them clear away their downed trees, but has also painted, done wallpaper, fixed leaks, yardwork, rebuilt a kitchen.....pretty much you name it and he can do it.

the fun begins, the insurance company is saying oh it can be fixed but I have an independent structural engineer coming Saturday. The good news is that the house next door is indeed mine to rent and that is in process. It's not the greatest b ut it will do: it has a fenced back yard so Gracie and I can be reunited, although my granddaughter is likely to have a meltdown over that. She is totally in love with her. That is going to be hard. It will be a good place for me to store my furniture, what is left of it, and to keep an eye on whatever is going on next door. That's the good news. The other daily news is that last night my car and my daughter's car were both "entered"...possible we didn't lock the doors, we've both been so stressed. I really didn't lose anything, she lost her office computer and her Rolex watch. Let's see what tomorrow brings!
