homeless

it finally happened...I'm homeless. Tree fell on my house...humongous tree...and crushed the end where my bedroom is...knocked house off foundation, supposedly. I'm visiting my son in md. and will be going home tomorrow to talk to relevant people. Gracie is staying here for a while. The good news is that we were not there or we would be dead. It still sucks of course.

I have no idea what I will have to do until I talk with insurance and a couple of contractor friends. As you can imagine, my biggest concern is my dog...a friend offered their camper and if the city will let me put it in my backyard, I could get my dog back and deal with the rebuild. I'm just in shock right now...can't sleep. My son is driving back with me tomorrow. Gracie is staying here but I'd like to get her home soon but I understand I can't live in my house. I can stay with my daughter or with friends (daughter is without power right now but that's a minor thing at this point) while I assess but none of them are suitable for a 120 lb. dog. Any good ideas?

So glad you are ok! Maybe the insurance company will have some ideas for temporary housing for you and Gracie. Are there any other Newf-Netters in the area?

But there might be some a little further away that might help.......Hope you can stay on your property in a Camper.

I am so sorry this has happened..But I was pleased to read you have insurance, that is at least better.

You need a big cyber :hugs: :hugs:, wish we lived closer to help :( Ronnie

I'm so sorry that happened! If you needed to as a last resort, contact your area rescue and see if they would be willing to do a temporary placement with a suitable family for a few months until you can get yourself squared away. It wouldn't be ideal, but at least you'd know she was in a safe, healthy environment.

Am so, so sorry to hear this. Was just through Charleston a couple of weeks ago and thought it was a beautiful area. I, too, have no other suggestions. Perhaps your insurance company can help, as they all seem to be having more and more experience with this kind of stuff. What a pain in the ---, but at least you are okay, although that's not much consolation.

I would think ( or hope at least ) you're insurance would cover a hotel room during the rebuild. Good luck, and glad you weren't home when it happened. Homes can be rebuilt.

I am so sorry, but glad no one was home!

Are there any NNers within 100- 200 miles or so, not in state? The camper also sounds like a good solution .

I'm originally from Charleston. My parent still live there - up in South Hills. They just got power back on Thursday, but then lost it again last night. They also have a tree across their driveway blocking them in. Six people in their neighborhood lost houses due to trees, and their cabin up at Elkview has a hole in the roof. I've seen pictures and heard the stories, and am totally shocked at the damage. The entire city is just wrecked.

I believe Christ Church downtown has been set up as a cooling shelter, and they may have mobile insurance units on site too. I'm so sorry you are going through this. My prayers are with you, and I wish we were closer to help.

Also, my parents send their dogs to a place called Camp Critter Creek. It's a few miles up 79 (I think off the Cabin Creek exit) and they LOVE it. The dogs get spoiled rotten, but I don't know if they were damaged or not.

As of 10am this morning most of Kanawha City was still without power (that's where my dad's dental office is) so I'd look at hotels or friends away from that area.....but actually I believe that's where you may be from?

Again, I'm so, so sorry you're going through this.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I am also very glad that you were not home when this happened and that you and Gracie are safe.

Definitely check your homeowners policy. Most provide a reimbursement for hotel or rental home if your house is uninhabitable.

Stay safe and please let us know if there is anything we can do.
