Hello,

My name is amanda, im 20 years old and about to move into a new house with my fiance. i can not imagine being in a house without a dog since i have been raised with dogs my entire life. I have always wanted a huge affectionate dog and i am convinced and in love with the newfi! I know about the drool and the neediness of their forever shedding coat and am still not deterred. The main reason i joined this forum because i wanted to get information on breeders and fellow newfi owners and their experience! I am looking for an affectionate dog that will be my best friend and who i can take camping, to the beach and other things me and my love like to do but it also has to get along with my other animals like my tiny ferret. The newf sounds perfect for this. I am not planning on getting a puppy until another few months, but i wanted to get more info.

So heres my few questions:

How much is a newfi pup? I have seen prices from 400 to 2000 so i want to know what the average was.

Also i would like to know if anyone is aware of any breeders in the new york state area. I do travel and can go to neighboring states but i dont want to make a 15 hour drive to be honest. Any direction to some good breeders i could speak to would be great.

Thanks for the welcome hope to talk to everyone soon!

Love, owner to be,
Amanda

Hi and welcome :wave:from Central Massachusetts, Amanda! You are in luck, there are a number of great breeders in your neck of the woods. Be sure to do your homework and research the breed. Your Regional Club is the best place to start. Depending on where you're located (there are several that cover different areas of New York State) you might want to check out upcoming activities that the clubs sponsor. You'll get that info on the Newfoundland Club of America's website. http://www.ncanewfs.org/index.shtml

Beware of internet searches for puppies. Lots of back yard/puppy mills advertise on the net. Generally, if the price of the pup is on the low side, you'd want to ask someone knowledgeable what they think before making an impulse buy. Keep in mind the purchase price is a small consideration, it's the cost of owning and caring for the puppy over it's lifetime where the real money comes in. Vet care, training, grooming can get expensive and more so if the pup has health issues. Ask questions and speak to experts. Be prepared to wait for a pup from a good breeder, the better breeders don't breed their dogs often.

Or you could look at rescue for an older pup or full grown dog. Good luck in your search for your Newf.

Tricia2 makes an excellent point for you to consider. Well she actually makes 2 excellent points. That's why we keep her around. LOL :whistling:

So just to emphasize.. It is not the initial cost of the Newf but the upkeep that you need to be prepared for. Vet bills (meds) alone are usually triple what they would be for a "normal" dog. If there are health issues you are into some serious money!! Even with health insurance should you choose that route. I would be living in a box under a bridge without mine.

Also the food, supplements, grooming, rearranging your entire house and yard to suit your Newf.
I speak from experience. :uhoh2:

Secondly, Rescue might be a good option for you.

Welcome and keep us posted !!!!

Hi Amanda,

Welcome from Newf Hampshire!!!

I have always said: "big dogs, big problems, big money"! However, I wouldn't trade them for anything!

At least 6 years ago, I had asked 2 separate breeders what their puppies were going for.
One said: $1500.00, and the other said: $1600.00. So, at this point I would suspect $2000.00 per, is not out of the question.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome from Alberta-you will learn LOTS from the knowledgeable Newf-Netters, keep reading and learning and you will have all of your questions answered. Attend a few shows, and Newf get togethers and meet newf owners, you will be surprised what you learn and what will happen. Perhaps a breeder will CHOSE you to raise one of their pups. Good Luck Anne Marie

Hello everyone thanks for the warm welcome.

i know the price is a small consideration compared to the investment i am putting my time and money into with a newfi, but i was just curious what the average was. i am prepared to wait for my pup and to pay top dollar for a healthy companion.

as always i research all of my pets and a newfi is no exception (hence why im here trying to learn from the best ;-) )

thanks for all the tips the newfoundland club of america site is a little difficult but i managed to find breeders in my area.

thanks for all the tips, ill keep ya posted!

Welcome! A good way to find a reputable breeder is the look at the NCA Breeder's List and the breeder's lists of the regional clubs in your area.

You can find this information on the NCA site
www.newfdogclub.org

Joining your regional club is a good way to meet other newf owners and their dogs and some breeders too.
Not sure where in NY you are, but there are several regional clubs in the state and surrounding states. They have fun events that you might want to attend.

Welcome from NYC! I have a newf rescue puppy (almost 5 months now). Rescue is a possibility though rare for a puppy. In my case it was probably just as costly as using a breeder. I just prefer the idea... Anyway, you've just got to accept an open bank account... vet bills, sensitive bellys (= expensive dog food), grooming. Oh well... we love them anyway... no regrets for me. Just be prepared.

Welcome from Australia..........Newfie prices in Australia start form $2000....Luckily there are not many BYB's over here, just long waiting lists :)
Good luck with your search, but as the others have said, the purchase price is not the greatest cost :) Ronnie
