we have a big dog fair thing in port perry each year and they have dock dogs there so i went over to check it out. it really is quite a neat fun thing to do with your dog but it was mostly labs. has anyone tried this with their newfs or have seen it ?? i was thinking of trying it with ozzy but he was no more impressed with seeing dogs in the water as he is people, i think he thinks he has to stop everything from being in or near water!!LOL!! so its no dock dogs for him!!

Didn't Rita give this a try with Remington? We'd love to do it with Neptune!
Yes Rita had Remington in classes for dock dogs. However she gave it up as he wasn't taking to it. She thinks it might be just because of the facilties and plans to try it again in another location.

This should be an excellent sport for Newfs with sound rears who are at the smaller end of the weight range (100 - 140 lbs). Heavier Newfs are unlikely to get the distance/height that this sport seeks.

i have a very hard time with ozzy by water, he gets very upset if anyone is in it!! there is no holding him back. he was very upset that the dogs were jumping in. when we take him to the water he runs around trying to keep everyone out and will swim at you if you are in swimming.

Yes I tried this with Remington. The classes were in the evening at a horse therapy pool. It was a portable dock which was very low and Remington didn't like jumping off it. I'd like to try him in a larger pool but haven't had a chance to do this yet. I'm pretty sure Remington would love this as he has no trouble jumping off docks into a lake, it's just a matter of finding the right place to get him started.

If I EVER stop traveling....Riley will make an awesome dock dog. We have a club down in Fort Meyers that meets and practices. Even dogs with larger butts...:icon_redface:...like Riley...can trial. Like obedience, there is a point system, so even if your dog has a ginormous butt....like Riley....you can still qualify and title as a dock dog, or a splash dog...there are several different organizations that have basically the same premise.

Bristles competes in dock dogs. She just earned her Junior National title this past weekend at the Illinois State Fair. Her best jump of the weekend was 13 feet. Her personal best is 14'4". She has a blast competeing with all the labs and retrievers. We got into this through my niece and have used it as a fun way to work on water work tasks. She now readily jumps off boats and will retrieve the life jacket, cushion, bumper, and oar without any problem. To her it is just fun whether she is retreiving the water work equipment or her favorite purple squeaky toy.

Events are held through out the US and around the world. To fine an event go to www.dockdogs.com and click on events. There is a regional club in Ontario, website is http://www.ontariodockdogs.com/ they also have a forum on the www.dockdog.com site just click on fourm and scroll down to the club section and click on the Ontario Dockdogs section.

It is a great sport with great people and fantastic dogs of all sizes. At the state fair in one of the waves this past weekend the dog before Bristles was a boston terrier jumping over 8 feet. If you would like more info send me a PM.

Bristles loves the sport and is a great crowd pleaser. It is just pure fun in the water. Our next event in the Chicago area is in Rockford over labor day and at the end of September in Yorkville. The Yorkville jump is fun because it is into a lake.

Thanks Cissy you need to come out and see her jump.

Hope everyone is having a great summer

Aha! That's why she was such a great jumper at the seminar!! Now if she could just master that take-she'd get her WD and WRD all in one day!!

You'll have to give us deatils of the labor day event, can we bring our unentered dogs?

The Labor day event is at the Waterfront festivle in Rockford. You can bring your dogs the only restriction is for females in heat. Other than that any dog can jump.

You have discovered my secret of getting her to jump from the boat. It has to be fun fun fun and for Bristles a chance to jump into water from anything is fun fun fun.

How fun! Yesterday was the first time we've taken Gabe to the lake to swim. He was apprehensive of the water at first but once he got the idea that he actually could swim (I KNOW he didn't think he could at first) he really seemed to enjoy it! If he continues to enjoy this, we may look into this for our Gabe. Thanks for the advice about the size of the Newf, Peter. I wondered how Newfs would fare against other dogs. Here is my Dock Dog. Gabe was just chillin' on the dock after the swim.
