I have come to say goodbye for a while.... on the 14th of this month we lost our beautiful wookie bear.
Our family is torn apart in grief. Wookie had emergentcy surgery on the 13th (also connors birthday) He had been off his food a little (nothing new for him!) and had last a little weight (again nothing new for him) he was pretty much himself... maybe a little lazier.... after this went on a few weeks 9again not out of character for mr fussy fusspot) we noticed his stomach looked a little puffy... counted back, and his worming was oer due by a fortnight ... (having hayley, it had slipped our minds) So we thought.. oh no he has picked up something from the doggy park... so we wormed him... after a day, no difference, nothing in his stools (yes we were checking) so I called the vet... they couldnt fit him in till the next evening ... he was in no noticeable pain.. just had a slighly distended abdomen... so we took that one.
well I noticed that afternoon (the 13th0 that his heart seemed to be beating really fast... but again, still not in pain )he was chasing magpies god dammit) well by the tim we got him to his appointment, his heart rate was 204 beats per minute (should b around 80) and he was very lethargic. The vet was concerned and at first thought he had dilated cardio myopathy ( can be a newfie problem) but on ultrasounding his abdomen, commented that his spleen looked odd, even torn. we realised then that things could b serious (her face gave that away as well) his abdomen was full of free fluid of which she took a sample. It was found to have white blood cells in it. She then decided that he needed surgery.
Once they got in there, the sourse of the problem showed itself... Wookie had swallowed a toothpick ... This pointy little bugga had lodged itself in his stomach just above the acid leven... alwaying it to stay there, and not be disolved as would normally happen. It fested there for a while she said, because it had started to rot. From his stomach, it punced through the side into his spleen. (what she was seeing on the U/S) his stomach was a mass of infection turing his whole bdy septic.
She said usually the first sign is going off theor food, but because this was common for wooks, it was easily overlooked. the fact that he statred eating the satin balls I had made up as well... confused the situation even more.
He put up a good hard fight after the surgery, but surcummed at 7.30am on the 14th.
H was still a baby only having turned two in april.
his passing has left a great biggapping whole in our lives... he was more than a pet to us... the boys called him their brother, and are both grieving accordingly. I just feel like someone has ripped out my hear torn it to pieces... and it back and pretty much said... well you wont be needing that anymore!
Thank you to everyone who has messaged me (especially Nessa and Meg through facebook), it really does mean a lot!
NN is just too hard for me right now.... but im sure I will be back at some stage
