Tongue Swelled & Turned Blue!!

I got a phone call from my brother late last night to tell me that my niece just found a lump on their 1.5 year old dog's tongue. He was concerned if it was cancer....I tried to reassure him and told him that it was unlikely but since their boy likes to chew on sticks I suspected it may be a sliver. The dog seemed fine so they thought they would see what tomorrow brings and take him to the vet then. Not 15 minutes later, I get another phone call and my 16 year old niece is hysterical in the background and my brother is asking me for directions to the 24 hour clinic. The poor boy's tongue swelled up and was turning blue....his tongue was so thick it wouldn't fit in his mouth!!! I told him to load up the dog ASAP and tell my niece to call the clinic and tell them what is happening and that you are on your way in so they can prepare. When he arrived they immediately gave him two needles to counteract the reaction and they waited for a couple hours and when the swelling was hardly going down they gave him another needle. At about 2:00 am this morning they allowed them to take him home but his tongue was still a bit swolen. A couple hours later he was back in because his face started swelling up with welts/hives and they gave him another needle. They are assuming it is an allergic reaction from anything from a possible spider bite to having licked peanut butter off my nieces finger 20 minutes prior to her detecting the lump on his tongue. Apparently the lump my niece found was a salivary gland that was enflamed.

I suggested always keeping Benadryl suppositories in the house and making sure everyone in the family knows where they are kept. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions at what else can be done to prepare for something like this happening again?

Does Benadryl come in the meltables, the ones that melt on the tongue? That would be good also to keep on hand (making a note to self to look for those at the store).

I hope your brother's pup is feeling better today.

Yes they come in those little strips that you can just put on the tongue. How seriously scary. Hopefully he is now better.

He is doing much better today. Unfortunately, we have no clue what may have triggered this scary reaction. It was quite traumatic and even though our own two dogs have not had an allergic reaction like this, we will be stocking some Benedryl in our medicine cabinet anyway.
