Prayers Needed

Surgery was SUCCESSFUL!!!! My sweetie will live a long and happy life. Of course, she had to have the "device" at an additional 800 bucks - such a Diva!!!

I get to see her in about an hour. She stays tonight and if all is well, we go home tomorrow!

Thanks all for the support. Amelia and I very much appreciate it. :grouphug:

the

I spent about an hour with Amelia this afternoon. Apparently her meeting and greeting of everyone possible on her way to see me, tired her out a bit. After several licks and tail wags, she feel asleep and rallied long enough to make a gallant effort to eat my pen and remove her IV port; then was snoozing again.
I just got a call from the hospital and she's doing great. They will do another echo on her tomorrow and if all is OK, she and I will head home. Thanks again for the support.

A few things I've learned from this:

If your pup gets an SAS diagnosis, definitely go for a second opinion. PDAs can cause velocities which look like SAS.

From what I can gather, here's what went wrong with Amelia's diagnosis:

The first cardiologist could easily have misheard her murmur. Circumstances such as the dog breathing, fidgeting, and extraneous noises can interfere with proper auscultation. Apparently Amelia's wasn't that loud and not constant. Her increased velocity through the aortic valve was due to the PDA ultimately forcing more blood into the left ventricle. Increased volume results in increased velocity. The breakdown occurred with the first cardiologist's echocardiogram. Either the part of the heart, where a PDA occurs, wasn't checked or the values weren't read properly. My guess is that it wasn't checked, assuming Newf=SAS.

As I stated in an earlier post, a transducer that isn't parallel to the aortic valve can give erroneous velocities. The thing I learned with respect to this is that when the transducer isn't parallel, the velocity will always be lower, never higher...basically a false negative.

If any dog benefits from this, it will all have been worthwhile.
