Newf Gus-Foster-1 week update

Hi all-
Well it has been one week today that Gus has been with us. Noche and he are fast friends and are doing great. Gus is starting to approach us pretty well now and is starting to learn his name. I have been working on the sit, down and leave it commands. I will start walking him on the leash once he gets his sutures removed. He loves being outside. He had some issues eating inside the house. He would take a bite of food then pace around the house look at me with kind of a scared look then do the same thing again. Then I tried feeding him in the laundry room by himself and he would not eat a full meal there either. (something about being confined... not sure) So I started feeding him outside and there are no issues there. I am excited to get him to the vet so we can see how his weight gain is coming along.

Gus is still pretty nervous inside the house. My initial guess is that he was never allowed inside. We have been crating him during the day and he is quite the escape artist. He has gotten out of the wire crate 3 times. One time I think that we forgot to latch one of the latches on the side door. Unfortunately, he got out again today. He is one smart cookie. I am going to latch the crate with some other latches or something because he is too smart for his own good. He does fine once he is in the crate. He is quiet and eventually just lays down. I wish I could just leave him in the house but he is too nervous. When he has gotten out I noticed that he has nose prints on just about every window in my house. He chewed one of the slats to my blinds and broke it and knocked over a side table in the living room. I am not sure why he is so nervous in the house. If I just left a window open with a screen I think that he would bolt for sure. The DH has been going home at lunch to let him out to go potty. Being that he got out again today we left him out. Rescue told me about latching the crate with some other latches. We will try that tomorrow. The DH got him a big femur from the butcher so I think that he will be ok for a little bit. I am not sure how long he was on the street but he is pretty skiddish at times. Any advice would surely be appreciated.

He sure is a love bug. Total leaner and snuggler! He loves being on the bed with Noche. He had his head resting on her rump last night. It was pretty darn cute!!! If we are in the house and sitting down he seems to be pretty comfortable. He will come right over sit or lye down.

Any advice would surely be appreciated.

No advice here about the crate..sorry.... Poor thing...I wish it was easier to know whats going through their minds.

"Gus Gus" sounds like he's going to be a real lovey dovey once he completely relaxes!!

I use the leash clips too. As far as the pacing, I am a big believer in the the botanical flower essence line of attack. I have used Equilite's "Angel of Mercy" on several rescues and it has calmed them down considerably. I have used "Devil Be Gone", and seen some very promising results. If you would like contact info on these, just let me know. Of course all the great love and support you are giving him already is helping, it does take time....

I've seen others who have escape artists use the leash clips on their crates with great success. Sounds like Gus has made alot of progress in one week's time. Your love and patience have been so good for him. Please give both your babies a big hug from us.

if he is a snuggler try putting something with your scent inside hies crate or a large toy that he can use to snuggle up to as he will need a lot of reassurance . Also leave softly playing radio on near hiom or even a tv if he will tolerate these as it will take his mind of his surroundings. Sometimes even a tape of your voice reading a story, newspaper , anything is a useful tool as well

He's probably freaked out about being inside. If he's not used to it, or was never allowed and treated badly when he tried, he's probably got some severe issues with the whole concept. It'll take a while, probably, before he realizes he won't be abused because he's in there.
Thanks for taking him in.

Sounds like Annabelle.......She was terrified of inside at first. She just took a little while to settle. She was also not potty trained. And we were never able to settle her in a crate. So we gave up on the idea completely. She doesn't really need one.
I am glad he is settling in. Bless you for looking after him. Gus is quite lucky.

Thanks for the advise. The clips are working like a charm. Gus went to the vet yesterday and he is UP 7 lbs. We are thrilled. So that would be 7 lbs in 8 days. Yippee.

Your patience is clearly evident. Rescue Newfs are so special and for you to provide him a safe home and allow him to blossom is so much appreciated. Thank you for fostering. he sounds like such a love bug.
Gojie was an escape artist too. That boy could get out of anything..
Hugs from one foster mom to another for doing such a wonderful thing.

Oh the dog that wasn't ever allowed in a house. Been there, done that. I know exactly what you're going through. Lot's of positive reinforcement and love is all that you need. Oh and lots of treats. It won't take Gus long to realize that being in your home is not only okay it's a great place to be.

As Debra has also said, thank you from one rescue person to another.

Great news...always happy to see each dog progress in foster care...even a tiny little step forward one day at a time.
