Need a new laptop....

OK...I bought my laptop about 2 years ago and it is now a desktop. The screen back light burnt out. It is a Compaq presaio (piece of crap!!!!)
I need some suggestions to research. I use it mostly for email and small business functions. I have a pampered chef business and the back up on my programs for ordering and my financial records take up quite a bit of memory. My compaq has a 80GB hard drive that is just about full I think at this point it has 4.6GB left. Part of that issue seems to be the vista upgrade that I received in the mail shortly after my purchase. I kinda thought I was messing with fire when I installed it. I hate vista, I much prefer XP.

TOP OF THE LINE - ALIENWARE...... with facial recognition logon (this is a hardcore gaming brand)

HP or Dell - Try their outlet stores online good systems for less than standard prices.

I agree with HP or Dell or even Gateway. Our Toshiba Satellite is a piece of .... Crashed the third week, too late to return it, and it took weeks to get anyone to send a repair slip, return a call, anything.

I have been looking at Dell. As a pampered chef consultant we get an extra percentage off. I am not sure about Dell though I have not heard the best about them either.

I just purchased an HP laptop with a 320GB hard drive, 2.0GH Intel processor, 3GB Ram and a 17 inch monitor. Sorry but it has Vista Home installed (I don't know when Windows 7 will be coming out, I heard soon, but what is soon?)
It has a dvd burner, 3 usb ports and a SD card reader. I found it for $700 at Sams Club. HH Gregg, if you have one there was advertising one for $649, but then they wanted $199 for a 3 year warranty, or $299 for accidential and Sams wanted $79 for the 3 year. Sorry I can't remember the model number and I am at work. I think it also came with Quicken. I just got it last weekend and haven't played with it much.

Hope this helps some and good luck it is so frustrating to know that a major purchase like this will be outdated soon.

OK, Here is my 2 cents. Doc's Mom touched on it. When I got Ian's laptop the big ticket item was the warranty. Looking at HP from HP, Gateway from Gateway, HP from Best Buy, Gateway from Best Buy among others. In the end best buy had the best price on the kid proof, bomb proof, dog ate my laptop proof warranty for the best combined price (laptop and warranty). If you looked at the combined cost going to best buy was the best. Also their service has been really good. I think the only thing left original on the laptop is the hard drive. They have replaced the mother board, power supply (2), the case, the screen, and the keyboard all free of charge no hassles.

I have an HP and like it...but, I would seriously consider looking at a Mac. I had to be compatible for business reasons...but, if it is mostly for Internet and email, at least look into the Mac.

I have a compaq presario, it has been reliable apart from the battery that never charged up from day one, didnt think anything abot it and took it in when I had the time to find out that batteries are classed as consumables and only covered for the first three months, and I was over that period.

I would get a Macbook. It's not as expensive as the Pro version. Once you go Mac you'll never go back  Look at Consumer Reports ratings for more info.

I bought a refurbished Dell laptop about 4 years ago with software already installed (Microsoft Office). Was a good deal. No problems yet.

I have a refurbished Dell laptop with XP. I didn't want Vista yet when I bought it. I've had no problems with it. I have an older Gateway desktop (before Acer bought Gateway), had no problems with it, but since Acer bought Gateway I wouldn't purchase a thing from them. HP or Dell or purchase a Mac.

At least with Dell, look at the Intel processor instead of AMD. There seems to have been less problems with Intel versus AMD.
