Marcus update

We postponed the surgery as we were blindsided during a lengthy physical exam. Marcus has partial cruciate tears in both knees. The advice is clean up his skin issues...which are constant do to his huge amount of allergies (2 months) do the first knee surgery with a 4-5 month recovery, do the 2nd knee surgery same amount of recovery time. We cancelled the Lar Par surgery to digest everything. There is a huge risk of AP doing any surgery on a dog after having tie-back surgery.
Thinking it over and talking to people and we trust and his breeder, we have decided that he will not die from the cruciate ruptures but he can from the Lar Par...I cannot go through a year (with the ACL) worrying that he will have a breathing episode. So we have set his LP surgery for next week. He does not limp, he doesn't appear to be in any pain and his chiropractor has not seen any problems. We will be very careful, not allow him to jump on the grooming table, add a ramp to our van etc. He doesn't play or run around as he cannot breathe so we will take care of that and deal with the knees with homeopathic care and pain management if needed. He is not a pup that will live until he is 10 or 12, though we pray he will. He has been sick with something since we brought him home. He is happy...he doesn't play with Max much or go for long walks but he loves his couch and car rides and trips for ice cream. He curls up close to Max at night and still climbs up in bed with us. I think he is content with his life as it is and we love him so.

darn, you made me cry reading this. I think you are completely right with your thinking. Also, with conservative management his acl's may heal somewhat. The LarPar won't heal on it's own.

I agree, this made me cry. Marcus is making the best of his life and you are helping him live it to the fullest. I, too, pray he lives to be 10 or 12. Who knows, with excellent care....

Agree with the PPs on the tears.

Zu had a partially torn ccl last year. We managed it with rest, NSAIDs and (in the past 6 months) chiropractor and acupuncture. It did heal, and was doing OK until she completely blew the other CCL (mind, we were no longer keeping her quiet at that time - that cruciate probably would not have blown - this year - if I hadn't let her play chase in the backyard.

Gentle healing thoughts to you and Marcus.

I completely, 100% agree with you and would do the exact same thing in a heartbeat.

Marcus is clearly in the best hands he could possibly be in. You're both in my prayers.

After having a senior newf with LP, I think you are doing the right thing by having the LP surgery done right away. There are huge risks of AP but breathing episodes, as you said, can get very bad. I wasn't able to have surgery for Chance because of his heart issues, but I would have if it was possible. Sending all my good thoughts and prayers for your sweet boy.

Poor old sweet marcus doing it so tough. Agree fully with how you are doing the LP surgery first, it is the most important.
There will be lots of prayers form here and sending all the positive thoughts and energy too from all of us....hope it all goes well, thinking of you :hugs: Ronnie

I agree with you a zillion percent. He is so lucky to have you guys, and you're lucky to have him. Last year a friend and I helped a senior lab (he was 14!!!!) having a LAR PAR episode. His parents opted for the surgery (which at the time I thought was nutty because he was 14!!!), but he came out AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sending giant hugs and Newfie kisses to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
