Lola learning to pull a sled

Since I was bombarding you all with Bosco photos I put off posting this for two days :)
We are going to try to teach Lola to pull a wagon or cart.
Not for competition, just to give her a job. She is a smart active girl, sometimes too much for her own good. She LOVES having a job. It will be easy things like taking out a garbage bag to the dumpster or going with me to get the mail (quarter mile up the driveway) etc..

Her harness came in on Saturday, but since we do not have her sled ready yet. I just hooked my wood sled to her traces (is that the right word?)
So even though the traces bumped her legs and at the end one was between her legs, we just wanted to see how she reacted to noise and a sled dragging behind her..Would she freak out? Or not care?
We were careful to keep her on flat ground so the sled did not run up on her until we get the proper equipment built.
Jack is making her sled and cart in our woodshop over the next month.

You can see her very first seconds/minutes after I hooked it to her...

(btw) that's me all bundled up at the end with her heeling beside me

Looks like I might have to hook Tiki up to a Tobogan, if we ever get any snow down here!! Lola looks like she is a natural!! How much does she weigh now? I just weighed Tiki yesterday, he was 119#.

Lola is now 113 pounds and 22 months old.
She really enjoyed it. I can't wait until we get the shafts made for the sled and the cart and wagon made for spring.

Great way to introduce her to pulling. A few of mine freaked out about the rigid shafts of the cart touching them the first time I attached them. She'll be good and ready once Jack completes the cart. Good girl Lola.

Mudji was fine with that sort of rig. But when we added the shafts, he was a scaredy cat! I might have to try this this way to see if he'd still pull a sled or aluminum flying saucer 8).. (showing my age I know)

Love the shot of the bus!

Ginny and Hannah,
This is good to know. I thought it would be scarier with the sled loose back there. I will ease her into the shafts. I think with her personality she will be Ok, but you never know

Nice job, Kel! Angus was the same way.....just went to work like he'd been doing it all his life! We'll enter a draft trial together next fall.....Riley might be ready by then!

Great Lakes Newfoundland Club had a trial last spring, but I don't see anything yet on their calendar for 2011.

That was wonderful! Now I want to try that with Journey. Do you think it would hurt Zeus since he is lame (front left elbow OA)? If pulling something wouldn't hurt him I think he might be more willing to do that than Journey. Love the video!

I really don't know anything about carting. I am just starting. Maybe someone with more experience could chime in or ask in a thread because I don't know how many people will see the question here.

Anyone know??

Then there's PONC, SCNC, and NCNC all within 8 hours drive for a long weekend at a draft trial.
8 hours :shocker:
I will hug your boy before he goes and wish him good luck and congratulate him when he gets back..
I think Lola and I will be in the lake. It's really really hard to get me to leave here in the summer. (Plus I have 9 dogs to travel with...YES 9 OMG)

I know, such a party pooper :grrr:

Well....we can train together at least! The maneuvering courses are a challenge and alot of fun.

The trials are usually in the fall......we could rent a giant RV and haul them all down for a weekend!
