They just called the other family changed their mind. We are going to take Shiva in for a meet and greet and see how things progress from there.

I'M SO EXCITED!! I'm such a believer in fate - maybe this guy is totally meant to be yours! I can't wait to hear all about it. I'm hoping it goes well!!

I will post more later but everyone get out your sad face. He did not do well with Shiva and we nor the trainers were comfortable taking him home tonight.

Ok so the short of it is that he was a bit aggressive and rough with Shiva. Mark and I have both spent our entire dinner beating ourselves up for leaving him there. But the truth is I we weren't prepared to deal with him tonight and didn't have the things (kennel) necessary to ensure he and Shiva were both goin to be safe.

I am afraid that I'm not giving him a fair shake and that 45 minutes in a room is not enough time to truly evaluate how they will get along in the home setting. Or that if he was neutered things would be entirely different. Sorry guys i am just sick over this

First thing that entered my mind was SNIP,SNIP. It might be best to give yourself tonight to think things through. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Hey. hey. hey. It's going to be okay. Is the humane society going to have him neutered? Do you know if that's in his plan at all? Or are they leaving him up for adoption for a limited time instead? This poor guy's world got rocked recently and even though I don't know much about dogs, I wonder if he'd act differently in another setting.

When we were debating about adopting our 3rd cat we left our number with the office and said "if he's still here in a week, call us". This is a decision only you and your family can make. Sleep on it, but please don't feel guilty. Whatever is meant to happen with this guy will happen.

Did the humane society mention anything about being contacted by a rescue group?

I just don't know what the right decision is. We did find out that he has been at the shelter for a couple of weeks and before that he has been living in a barn for about 2 months I think the fire happened the end of December. I am going to call and talk to the director tomorrow. I just feel like a bad person for leaving him in that cage, but I have to make sure that Shiva is safe and that he is also

What about Newf Rescue in the area? If you're not able to adopt him yourself, could you "adopt" him and then turn him over to rescue? They would be able to assess him better than the shelter I would think.

Lori I don't know how that would work. I think ScNc is pretty over run right now. And honestly this boy is safe and the shelter is doing a good job of screening. I just wanted it to work for us.

Oh my gosh, they should have had you take them outside to meet. A room confines them both and it's possible the other dog felt threatened by Shiva coming into 'his' area and reacted by sending off signals Shiva misinterpreted - or not!

I'm sure your careful decision will save you heartache in the long run.

Shiva was relatively calm and other than the initial sniff was ambivalent until he came at her a couple of times. She was exhibiting good body language then she after a while started becoming nervous and wanted to cling to me. At that point we ended the visit.

I agree completely!! Just take your time, assess both dogs and your situation. Will the shelter neuter him if you adopt? Lots to think about, assess, and follow your gut. Keeping positive thoughts and prayers that it all works out well for this boy.
