My parents dog (a dog who have spent a lot time taking care of since he came around when I was 15) Hobbles, a flat coated retriever, passed yesterday at 14 years of age. My parents live in the country and this dog had been dropped at their property about 13 years ago. He was quite possibly the happiest dog I have ever met in my life. Such a zest for life at all times. My dad is not a dog person but even he found a place in his heart for him, as a I saw my dad cry holding his lifeless body. I was very close with this dog. He would groom random cats and let them sleep on his stomach, dig moles out of the ground and play with them and let them go back into the ground, sleep with the horses across the street. He never met anyone he didn't like. We once found him, when around 9, trying to drag himself across a field with his chest cut open and leg had been shot, the vet said he should have been in shock but all did was wag his tell when he saw us. Yesterday, cancer had finally got the best of him. I got the call the at 7 in the morning to come over quickly as it would be his last day on this earth. I sat down and watched as even with heavy fast labored breathing he was so happy people were petting him, his tail wagging the whole time. He couldn't even lay down because it would cut off his oxygen supply. Then he came over and stared at me with those big soulful eyes of his, and then I pet him and as I did he put his head against my leg which I was told he hadn't done with anyone else. Then he took a couple of steps in front of me and then turned around and looked at me, and then he just fell over and hobbles was no more. God I miss him.
