Hobbies?

I am a zen practitioner. It's very time consuming (like 10 hours a week, normally, full-time if you are doing a retreat).

So my hobby is sitting on a black cushion, in silence, perfectly still, for hours, doing nothing.

Wow, what an interesting bunch! Hmm, I haven't had enough time for my hobbies as of late, but I also garden, paint watercolors, do web design and development, and origami, the more difficult, the better. In the Spring and Autumn I run (cross-country) and try to keep up with doing yoga (I've slacked off, my bad). I love to read and study history, but being in school pretty much takes up all my free time so I haven't been able to do any of the fun stuff. I also love to bake, can cook anything, and used to sew and quilt (applique quilting and watercolor quilting were my faves). I have a knitting machine I have to learn how to use, but can't crochet or really hand-knit for beans. Can't sit still long enough to keep at it. I also like to make jellies and jams, can my produce (ketchup, relishes, etc.) and used to make my own wine (but I still prefer the Spanish Rioja from the store, lol). I guess I'm kinda hyper, and like to work on whatever suits my mood, hence the wide variety of hobbies.

We are Corvette enthusiasts. Hubby has a 77 Shark. 406 small block. She's pretty wicked mean with a 4/11 racing gear. I have a 76 Stingray named Geraline(don't ask)
She's been modified too. She "scoots" too.
Then, hubby has a 98 Vert that was formerly owned by a crew chief of a well know race car driver. Totally fast!! And I have a 04 coupe. Combine all that with the rescues and MissP and there goes my money!!!Well, ok, not ALL my money but you get the drift right? Running 93 Octane in all makes for a pretty expensive hobby. I like to turn a wrench too so we have garage seesions with other C3 Vette owners and being he only female driver I have a good time getting greasy.
Here's my Stingray.

Then last but certainly NOT least is my favorite hobby, The Grandson!!
This one was taken in Cancun

I might, but not by name. We are part of a larger organization called the Northwest Territory Alliance. Most of our events are held in the either the Chicago area or in Indiana. We also attend an annual event in St Charles, MO for the Lewis and Clark Rendevous.

Lots of members, might know him by face instead.

Debra-

Loved the picture of your Vette. I had a '64 StingRay convertible that same gorgeous shade of blue. Love that color on a car. Had a '60 Alfa Romeo Super Spider the same color. The Bull Mastiff of the time loved both of them, particularly when we could go top down. Does Palin like it?

Palin doesn't mind the 04 or the 98 but the loud exhaust and loping sound of the 77 and 76 sorta spook her at her young age. She has come a long way with getting in the coupe and going for a ride. Sad to say she is already outgrowing the seat so we may have to take the truck from now on so she can have the whole back seat. She's already about 21" at the shoulder an 40 pounds. Sorta big bodied for a copue seat (ha)

I'm trying to see the emblem on the side of the car but can't quite make it out. It's definitely a C3 and from the 70's. If it says "Stingray" on that emblem then it is 76 or older. If its crossed flags and logo it oculd be a 77. Either way that's one pretty vette!! Does that hood emblem say LT1?

BTW you look beautiful!!!

Honestly, I have no idea.. I think it has the crossed flags on the hood. It's my "Dads midlife crisis mobile", but it is his pride and joy.

Well at least he didn't get a perm! :groovy: I heard that this is an indication of "mid life" as well as the fancy car.

I read a lot. I love cooking...anything vegetarian and/or Italian I'm pretty good, but I like learning new stuff. I love gardening and I have a huge canna garden in the summer. I just finished 6 years of post grad school so I'm trying to explore new hobbies. It's weird to have free time.

I also just bought a house, so I feel like that has been a hobby by itself. I hope to do a lot of volunteer work with my dog once we get it. I also love watching movies...especially documentaries. I'm trying to learn more about philanthropic work. My goal is to save enough to go to Guatemala to help starving kids there. (I just sponsored a little girl named Malvia and I want to see her progress). I also really like reading about personal finance and investing. My goals are to work out more, be more organized, and journal more.

Alicia, do you have any pictures of the inside of your house? My mentor gave my daughter one, and we stripped it, repapered, floored and ceilinged, then furnished it. I'll send you some photos. My son just picked one up at a yard sale, the owner's g-father had made it for her, but since she only had sons, she figured they'd never use it. So MY son bought it (with his entire savings), stripped ans painted the outside, and is hoping for the lighting, wallpaper and such for the interior as Christmas gifts. If I can get some pictures of it, I'll send them along, too. I have to admit, it is a very addicting hobby, all those cute minature things to put inside!!! Yours is beautiful I love the Christmas decorations.

That's wonderful that you are into philathropic work. I work with a guy who goes to Costa Rica every year for two weeks and works with a full team of physicians to provide medical care. He comes home with such a calm about him. He says its the best thing he does with his vacation time and wouldn't trade it for anything. I applaud you for your goal and I'm rooting you on.
I wish I could say I enjoy fininaces and I guess I do if you mean "shopping: since it takes finances to do it (ha) My poor check book gets balanced to within 100.00 and I'm happy as a pig in mud.:whistling:

Yeah, my checkbook is really tight..but I have a picture of this girl that I am helping from Guatemala on my wall. She has a huge distended stomach like she is pregnant. It's ridiculous. I put it on my wall so I would remember that there are people out there that can eat for a month on $30.

Sometimes it's hard for me to justify getting such an expensive dog when there are people out there like that. I guess more than anything it makes me extremely appreciative that I have the ability to have a dog and not have to worry about anyone starving. To me, a newf is a luxury item.

My friend at work goes to Guatemala with her daughter every year and she said it completely changes how they shop for food, and do not ever waste food. I think it is super scary to see people in these conditions and I am scared to death to do it...but I think it would open my eyes up in a whole different way. Her and her daughter are the type of person I hope one day to become.

Costa Rica is such a nice place...but yes, there is a lot of poverty there. See, those kind of people just inspire me.

I apologize. I just read this book called "three cups of tea" and I'm determined to change the world. (Very good read by the way).

Speaking of inspiring. I really like reading about everyones' hobbies. It makes me want to go out and do something new. I have thought about bee keeping a lot, especially after reading that book called life of bees, or something to that effect. Boat racing, cool cars, quilting! I would love to quilt! So many things to learn, so little time.

I should add that the thing I am most passionate and most inspired by right now is doing therapy dog work. My sit in therapy newf...is great. But not mine..just our classroom newf. We have been working with using dogs as pedagogical catalysts in our classroom for English Language learners. So, most recently my kids took FOREVER learning about dogs...but then got to present what they learned in front of a room full of people. Oh my god, they were so nervous! I told Nessa that one of my students browsed her blog for hours and used pictures of Nanook and Pooka for his powerpoint to explain information about the real newf therapy dog in our room and explain things like temperament, grooming, water rescue. It got so many laughs. We put in a conference proposal on therapy dogs in the classroom...so cross your fingers.

My shy, timid and scared students really turned into butterflies and showed their true colors thanks to the therapy dogs. It's crazy seeing how much of a difference they make at the school every day they are there. My kids are different people after working with these dogs. Absolutely unbelievable. So thanks to all of you who do work with your dogs.
