Has anyone used Kirkland (Costco) Dog Food?

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Costco's Kirkland Brand dog food. I saw it the other day and the ingredients don't look too bad.
As many of you know, I am recently divorced and on a much more restricted budget than before (I fed Orijen) and I have to make some cuts. I've already made cuts with the parrots (no more organic fruits/veggies...only regular) and the cat. I am spending about $130 a month on just kibble alone for my two boys and that's not including the salmon oil and supplements I give. I honestly spend most of my food allowance budget feeding my pets. I always make sure they have what they need even if it means I go without.
I am looking into finding a more cost effective kibble. I won't go below a premium kibble but I'm just wondering if any of you have any personal experience with Kirkland or with others like it. Gabe has a chicken allergy so I feed him a salmon based food which I won't be able to switch him from. The temptation with Kirkland food is that it's $30 for a 40 lb bag. That would decrease my cost significantly. I don't want to jeopardize my pets' health or vitality though. Anyone know where the food is made or where the ingredients are from?
Please don't list a link to DOG FOOD ANALYSIS. I know what the "reviews" state...just want to know if anyone has personal experience or know of anyone who feeds the food and what kind of results they've had.

Thanks! :)

I have a friend who' had Newfs for 30 years; she feeds Kirkland with no problems; she has one female aged 10 and a male aged 13 - going strong - so if they thrive on it, why not?

One thing you need to consider is the amount of food to feed. Even if you get a food that costs less, if you have to feed more then you are not saving.

My friend feeds Kirkland to her Newfs and they are doing great. She feeds each dog 1 to 1.25 cups per meal, twice a day. The same amount that I feed mine. The ingredients are very similar to most middle of the road premium foods at about a third less the cost.

Jeannie- All of the foods I have fed (minus the Orijen) have about the same calories per cup as Kirkland & Nutrisource...from what I've seen. So it should be about the same amount of cups per day as what I'm feeding now since all of the fat/protein ratios and calories/cup are similar.

from what i could see on the bag of costco dog food it is a good price for the product. if i had to go on a dog food budget i would consider this brand high on my list of comparables.

Lots of Golden people feed it. They really like it! I've never heard anything negative about it.

Oh...and watch the ingredients closely in fish based foods...even grain free. Some have chicken fat or meal. My son has a dog allergic to chicken and he's using Wellness now, but he's used Natural Balance too, which I believe, has other flavors with NO chicken, other than fish.

Thanks everyone for your support and input. There is a lamb and rice variety I might try for Gabe because of his chicken allergy. I think I'll get a bag next time I'm at Costco and give it a try. I'll keep you all posted. :) Murphy does fine on whatever I give him. I figure...he eats garbage, cat poop and bark from trees and he hasn't had an issue yet. Kirkland has gotta be better than those things! LOL!

Jess.. before we moved here we used to fed Kirkland to our Great Dane. We didn't have any problems with it at all. I think it will probably work well for you especially since you are still adding the other stuff in.

Jess, I took a huge pay cut at work at had to re-budget my budget so I put Maggie on it. She loves it, and so does my cat Mikey. He races to her bowl as soon as he hears me put it down and scarfs down as much as he can before she gets there. She pushes him out with her nose and ends up licking her bowl. It was a suggested food on my breeders list if I wasn't going to feed super-high end. Maggies coat is nice a shiny and the calories aren't out of line with other foods. Good luck!

Jess, I was just talking to Jeff, my son, and he looked at the ingredients of the Lamb and rice. I believe he found there's chicken something in there.

Ok..just looked it up...it's preserved with chicken fat. That might not work for Gabe. Murphy would be fine, tho.
