Has anyone used Kirkland (Costco) Dog Food?

Jess, I was just talking to Jeff, my son, and he looked at the ingredients of the Lamb and rice. I believe he found there's chicken something in there.

Ok..just looked it up...it's preserved with chicken fat. That might not work for Gabe. Murphy would be fine, tho.
Several foods have this and I can't figure out what the reasoning is to use chicken fat as a preservative. I know Taste of the Wild does too. One of the reasons someone would feed a lamb based food is allergies to chicken, so why they would put chicken fat in there, is confusing. And most people would not think to look for it either. Most likely it is not enough to make a difference. You could always mix it with another food to balance it out a bit.

Jeff is anal about reading the ingredients because his girl, Coco, is extremely allergic to any kind of chicken. He can't use the foods with chicken fat, or any chicken meal...nothing. So he uses Wellness, TOTW Pacific Stream, a couple of Natural Balance allergy formulas, and keeps searching for foods other than fish, without any chicken.

Unfortunately as you said, the TOTW Bison and Duck flavors DO have chicken something in them. So he can't use those. The TOTW Pacific Stream does not have any chicken products in it.

I don't get it either. But Kirkland and TOTW etc aren't allergy formula foods ... whereas some specifically are.

But interestingly enough the two dogs I have on Kirkland Lamb and Rice due to a chicken allergy, have done very well on this, so that is why I am thinking it may not be enough to cause a problem.

Good points. We have to read all labels carefully to avoid anything that might bother Darcy's IBD. I don't understand the chicken fat in those. It is amazing what is put in some foods. (We have to use the Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato, which I believe is considered one of their allergy formulas or maybe they call it Limited Ingredient Diet.)

We have fed Kirklands Chicken and Rice for years with no problem at all. Kirkland is made by Diamond using a formulation very similar to Diamond Naturals and Premium Edge.
The new grain free they just came out with is also made by Diamond, who makes Taste of the Wild. My guess would be that the Kirkland Grain Free is very close in formulation to the Taste of the Wild.
A few years ago we did a 1 year food test with our dogs. We divided them into 3 groups and 1 group got Purina Pro Plan, 1 group got Kirkland, and 1 group got Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet (cant remember anymore which LID diet we used)
They did better on Kirkland than they did on ProPlan and it was a toss up with the Natural Balance. Some of them have allergies, but the Kirkland is corn wheat and soy free anyway.

If we had a Costco here, I'd try it. But we don't. I don't have any allergic to chicken, however. Wheat, yes...only one. So he's just got to stay away from wheat, period. Doesn't need grain free.

Jess,

Kelly is correct. We feed Costco to our "herd" - lol. We personally use the chicken , rice and vegetable ( purple bag) and all LOVE it. No problems with digestive issues and coats look wonderful! We don't feed any more than a high end food - typical servings of 1.5 - 2 Cups twice a day. I know many people in our rescue feed Costco's "Nature's Domain" - which is their brand of TOTW....with good results. With our current landseer foster, we have four big newfs.....they gobble it up") Our berner, lab and golden also love it. Kim

Thanks so much everyone for your responses and input! It sounds like it might be a good bet! I will give it a try and let you all know. I'm going to Costco next week. ;)

So glad you posted this Jess. About 5 or 6 months ago I changed the Newfs food to Holistic Blend and their coats look terrible and we're having ear problems again. It's lamb and rice and grain free and all that crap. It's costing me almost $150/month and it's not worth it. I'm going to try Kirkland. I did feed it to my cats but they didn't really like the cat formula. If this brand comes in Lamb and Rice or wheat and grain free I'm going to try it. My guys don't do well on chicken either.

Will be very interested in how you get on as I have a 6 month supply of Orijen here but it will be going up again soon and its getting a bit expensive to feed so even if I just get it for Beau then I will save some money. Doesn't look too bad on the ingredients at least

I've been feeding Kirkland chicken & rice for about 5 years. I felt the ingredients looked OK, altho' I don't know where they are sourced. But don't know that with many more costly foods either. I see the Kirkland as a good mid-grade food. My dogs do fine on it. I supplement with the usual omega-3 oil, glucosamine MSM, Vit. C & E, CoQ10 - Just realized how long this list is!!!
