Gentleness of a Newf

Took Molly for a walk today in some fields along the shore of the river. She was of course doing a lot of sniffing here and sniffing there but at one point she just started walking by my side with her head held low . I thought she had something in her mouth so I lifted her head and told her to 'leave it' She immediately opened her mouth and a small baby field mouse fell out .. The little guy sat there and his head was going back and forth looking around obviously wondering what the hell had just happened then he disappeared into the long grass.

She had been carrying this little guy cradled in her (huge) mouth and he was none the worse for wear ..

Nice to be able witness the gentleness of this breed ..

She was just giving the little guy a ride! Such a good girl not making him a snack! Chance once had a baby bird hidden in his mouth. I could also tell by the way he was walking that something was just not right. Little one was a little wet but ok!

That must have tickled! LOL What a sweet, gentle girl she is.

Our Newfs are gentle with warm blooded creatures, but forget those cold blooded types...like snakes (dead if caught), Turtles (same outcome). I don't understand their intense, even frenzied, NEED to hunt down and kill any and all reptiles. They smell one, and they will try to tear down the fence to get to it.

I'd love to know if there's something in their genetic code which evolved from their original environment? They don't eat them...just kill them. They're definitely "prey" to our Newfs.

None of our other breeds are like that.

However, I can say that the Goldens wouldn't be so gentle with a mouse...or a bird...or anything warm blooded and "edible". Bleh.

Our Am Bulldog doesn't injure any of them. She'll carry around mice, turtles, birds (yes she picked one up one day - it was stunned after hitting a window) anything...gently.

Awwwww... These stories about Newf behaviour always fascinate me. I would love to get into their head. I have never been able to figure out why Murphy is gentle as a lamb with fat mean Meagan in the house but goes bonkers if she tries to go outside. She is not allowed out and maybe he knows that but weird all the same.
Your Molly sounds like such a dear girl.

I have seen this type of behavior over and over again with Gloria. They truly are gentle giants, and thank you for starting my day with this wonderful ancedote.

Good for Molly. It's nice when they show concern for another species.

Donna- Interested in your comment about Newfs and cold blooded things. Thunder has never seen a snake to my knowledge but our Ivan (Dingo Dog) absolutely HATES them. Found one in the yard last year, picked it up, shook it, threw it, repeat until dead. How do your Newfs get the turtles with all that shell?

Thunder will chase the squirrels for me (I've encouraged that) as it keeps them out of the bird feeder, but he never seems to really try and catch one.

EEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Please tell me you disinfected her mouth before accepting kisses? ;-)

Actually it's an awesome story. They are the gentlest of breeds.

What a timely story! Yesterday, the AC repair man came out to figure out why our compressor wasn't working outside. Later he told me we had 3 field mice living inside our unit (they had even chewed through the mouse bait box so that only a fragment was left!) But he assured me he had 'flicked' them out and stomped them dead.

PUUUULLLLEAzZZE. Do NOT tell me of your ghastly measures to deal with 3 tiny field mice. I wish your Newf's spirit could have occupied this moron's psychic.

Sheez.

Sure, it set me back $300, but it does every year. Any ideas of remedy that don't deal with stomping out the brains of said field mice???

I was interested in Donna saying her Newf has a tendency to 'kill' reptiles! Yikes. Our almost 3 year old BossMan lives here with our almost 7 year old iguana, who has the run of the house. Thankfully, they all seem to live in different worlds, even while sharing the same rooms. If Boss ever showed any aggression, one huge tail whipping from Todd would quickly put him in his place!
