Unfortunately Gander Bear passed on Christmas Eve. Despite the clean bill of health (except for being too boney) that he got from my vet two weeks earlier, Gander started to become weaker in the rear end and went off of his food. On the 23rd he stopped drinking and I knew then that this was our last battle and it was lost. I held back this announcement as I didn't want to dampen anyone else’s Christmas.

I take some consolation in knowing that his litter sister, Grace, who I co-own with the Tor Family in Indiana, is still going strong and hopefully will continue to do so for a long time to come.

Since Newf Friends was set up in 2007, Gander Bear has helped me support the rescue of Newfoundlands at various events, the latest being at Newfstock this past September - he raised over $2500 in sponsorships.

Gander has grand pups due in January and originally I was planning to keep two of the girls as potential breeding stock but now I’ll probably keep a grandson along with one of the girls.

Oh Peter, so very sorry to hear this. I hope he is living it up with my Gracie and all the others.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm glad, though, that he was healthy and happy almost right until the end, and that he didn't suffer. It's wonderful that he had such an impact on Newf Friends-His good deeds are like a pebble falling in a pond, the impact has started a circle of good that will affect many dogs to come.

Oh my. Such sad news. Gander will be sorely missed here on NN. I know how proud of him you were by your posts. As much as we want these guys to live a long time, when they get old, it's difficult to watch them struggle. I know you spared him of any loss of dignity and eased his way. Bless you for loving him so much and bless him for giving so much of himself.
