Breeder Rehome Question

My beloved rescue Chow, Chowder lost his battle with cancer yesterday morning. The loss of Chowder has left a hole in my heart and my pack. I have been thinking about adding another Newf to my home for quite some time now and I am really not interested in doing the puppy thing. I was thinking a breeder rehome might be the right way to go as I am looking for a younger to middle aged male, healthy and hopefully housebroken. I have just dealt with canine cancer and Puddles had TPLO surgery 2 months ago, so healthy would be a really nice change :) My question is, how do I find out if any dogs are available? I have contacted Puddles breeder but I was wondering about other breeders as well. Of course I would rescue in a heartbeat if the right dog came along. Thanks for your help.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Chowder...
Your breeder can help is he/she is so inclined. Just let her know that if she hears of another breeder needing to rehome, to let you know. A lot of breeders "network" and know what is going on in each others kennels. Sometimes retirees are available, too, if you are willing to take a slightly older newf.
And I would definitely contact some of the local rescues. Let them know what you are looking for and what you are willing to deal with....

Contact breeders & let them know what you are looking for. Breeders sometimes have adults available. That's how I've gotten a number of my dogs, including Volare.

I am so sorry for your loss of Chowder. I got Doc from a breeder when he was 10 months old. Him and his brother were from a previous litter, and he was house broken for the most part even though he lived outside. The only problem I had was he didn't know how to do steps and it is hard to try to pick up 80+ pounds of scared Newf to go out to potty.

I'm so sorry to hear about Chowder. I too have an older Chow.. she is almost 11. They leave a distinct mark on your heart.

The breeders.. call some and describe what your looking for. Many talk amongst each other at the shows. When I was looking for my Sadie... you would be amazed how hard it was to find an Irish Spotted Newf. Many of the local breeders started talking amongst each other and I actually received a call from a breeder had not originally called. Of course I was excited.. I had been looking for her for about a year.

If your into rescue, you can also contact the Colonial Newf Club. Dottie is really nice. Her email is newfrescue@cox.net. I spoke with her last week, and I know she has a few rescue Newfs now. The one set is a pretty sad situation.

Good luck with your search.

GOOD topic!!! It turns out that BOTH of my Newfs have been rehomes from breeders! I found them by getting VERY active in my local Newfoundland Club. I also put the word out that I was interested in rehoming somebody's old show dog.

PM me. I have some more information, if you want.

How great of you to consider adopting an abandoned Newf! I know my local club Colonial has a few very nice Newfies looking for their forever home. If you do to the Newfoundland Club of America's website, they have a directory of rescue groups. Our rescue contact, Dotty, is there, along withe application. I have also contacted several breeders to let them know I am interested in an older Newf. I would suggest going to the site of whoever breeder you like and trust. Often they show available Newfoudlands and if not, you can email them to tell them what you are looking for. Best of luck and please keep me posted. This will be one lucky Newf!

Are you going to the CNC water demo the end of this month? Its going to be at Codorus State Park in Hanover, PA. Its a GREAT way to meet people. More info is on the Club website.

Hi Louise,
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your Chowder. If you are willing to provide a home for a rescue, please seriously consider that route.

There's been such an increase in rescue due to the economy!

Newfondly,
Kathy

Honey, you can go to the NCA site.... www.ncanewfs.org and go to their breeders list. You can contact the breeders in your area and see if they have older newfs they are no longer showing/breeding that they might be rehoming. You can also go to the Regional club listings on the same site and contact their rescue person to see if there are any rescues needing a home.
