Hi everyone,

Jeff and Sandy here from Oshawa, ON. We decided to become a foster family for Newfs...four weeks later we became foster failures. We welcomed Ralphie into our home who joined Bear our Bernese and Leroy our Plott Hound. Our house may be small but it seems the pack travels in a five foot radius together. Ralphie has fallen in love with the family farm and is being trained to be a full time veggie/flower gardener once he decides the squirrels are no longer any fun...hmmmmmmm.

Welcome Jeff and Sandy. :beer:For those of you who watch our website and remember the saga of Murphy and Ralphie.. This is the end result. The following message I copied from Jeff with his permission to post here, Gives you a better idea of how lucky Ralphie is to end up in such a loving home cause no one else would likely put up with him. LOLLL :uglyhammer:

Well folks...time for a Ralphie update. I believe I have created a monster.

Ralphie gets to run free on the family 100 acre farm in Courtice. It is fenced in. I have been adding fencing. Ralphie is about to be renamed "Houdini". He can spot a crawl space and bolt out through it. He did it while Sandy and I were out there and ran out on the main road and ran and ran with me in tow. Now apparently you can lie down and newfs often will run back out of curosity. I decided not to this day as I had just called a guy in a truck an "a-hole" because he would not slow down. Why give him a target.

Now the main gate is fenced off and I think...smart right? Nope! Ralphie has a routine...run through the hay field...bolt down the hill, head to the creek and crash into the pond. Chase ducks out of pond...run with Leroy in no specific direction as fast as possible. Head back up the hill and run to the gate to the railroad tracks...push Jeff out of the way and wedge open the woden board and bolt across the railroad tracks to the other side into the corn fields.

So we are okay this is good he comes when we call, he understand "Ralpie come this way!" and returns. He runs with Leroy until he remembers that two days ago he thought he saw a squirrel in a tree or a stick fall. He runs around a bunch of trees until eventually I am somehow able to get him away. When we are 100 yards away he runs back and circles the tree. He will not respond to come so we go and get him. This time he comes. He crashes into the creek...soaked and begins to run. Things are back to normal and he is listening until all of a suden he dips out of sight and jumps across a creek and runs up the other side out of sight and I am trying to call him back. Squeaky toys do not work...me yelling in a high pitched voice does not work. When he finally seems me...I fall to the ground and holler "Ralphie help me". He has reason to ignore me now embarrassed and does so. After 15 minutes I am able to corner him and put him on leash and walk him back 1 mile perfectly heeling on leash as he is exhausted. That has been 6 days in a row.

Today he manages to find a fence on the property, crawl under by the drainage ditch onto the neighbor's property which is emvironmentally protected. Ralphie looses all hearing, most of his sight as he runs and dances ignoring me as I am sinking in wet swamp trying to position myself to grab him if he gets close enough. I was smart enough to bring treats but Ralphie didn;t get close enough or slow down enough to realize. Leroy my hound suddenly is my best friend and at my side sitting looking at the treat as Ralphie does the circle of a crazed meth head.

This is pretty much every day. Ralphie does eventually make it back to the car only then to step into a kid's pool of swampy water and stand and drink. he gets back into the car and tried to remove 8 lbs of burdocks and burrs from his wild run.

If I am to plant my garden...I am thinking of tying him to a car tire to clow him down. Other than that we love him to pieces.

Jeff

This was taken the first night Ralphie went to his "foster failures." Does he look like he made himself at home??

wow he sounds like a free spirit, some of this sounds very familiar.

One piece of advice dont let him get near manure or slurry, I can vividly remember trying to clean the smell from my newf, yeuchh!!!It sounds like the sort of thing Ralphie would enjoy too.

Looking forward to more photos and stories.

welcome from england

People so often think you need space to have a Newf but no so, as you've found out! Congratulations. You're set for a 3 dog night!!
