When they stop eating...

I'm so sorry Sandra:( It must be so hard on you. My thoughts and prayers are with you...
I only went through this when Roger had kidney failure. Getting him to eat again was tough because of the nausea. The thing that kick started his appetite again was green tripe, but you said Zoe can't have high protein and tripe might be too high a protein for her.

When my last dog did not eat, I took the medications, crushed them up, let them disolve in baby food and fed it to her through a large 50ml syringe (similar to what is used with a feeding tube). I did this small amounts at a time, maybe 10ml at a time and sometime mixed it with a little water to make it more viscous. Many times, the meds and food made her feel better and she was able to eat again on her own after a couple days. A full liquid diet is much easier for the stomach to tolerate. Good luck on your sweet Zoe.

Sandra can you get Nutri-Cal in Canada? We use it for puppies, or sick dogs who need a lot of calories really quick. It comes in a tube and you can just squeeze it into their mouth. Your Vet might have it on hand, or a feed store may have something similar.

I cooked plain chicken breast for Ivory, and she did really well on it. Some rice, or potatos occasionally as well, as she still needed carbs, but the fresh cooked still warm chicken was for every meal. I think it being warm helped her be more interested in it.

I'm sorry this is progressing so quickly. Hugs to you, Jim and Zoe.

Hi Sandra,
As you know my Timber has osteo right now and some days she doesn't eat so well either. She goes off her food for reasons that are unknown to me too. I have started supplementing her food with a powdered whey protein - all natural and unflavoured, any health food store would carry it. One scoop has 26 grams of protein (unfortunately only 110 calories). This is a big source of L-Glutamine too which is very helpful. Anyhow, I have dissloved some in liquid (water, chicken broth whatever) and used a syringe and shot it slowly down the side of her mouth. I've been wondering about liquid meal replacements like boost? and these would work with a syringe as well.
I know the desperate nights you're facing and when one day turns into 2 or 3. I'm so sorry you guys are going through this.

Oh, I also used powdered colostrum. You can find that at almost any farm supply store. Ebony enjoyed to lap that from a syringe as well.

Thank you everyone for all of the ideas and support. I will be picking up all of the suggested items and see what works.
Before I left for work this morning Zoe ate another can of salmon and 1/2 an english muffin. Success! Jim tried to give her some meat at lunchtime before he came to work, but she refused. We are splitting shifts up so that she isn't alone much, so I left work early to get home and was greeted by her woo-wooing and dancing about the house, happy as could be. I put the dogs out into the yard and she was racing around playing, rolling on the ground, jumping on Neptune. Oh what a great thing to see! We went for our hike and she trotted off ahead of me setting the pace and insisted that we go for our full hike, none of this shortened hike nonsenses. :) I am soooo glad I came home early! I have stopped one of her pain meds and increased another in it's place, so maybe that has done the trick. Hopefully she will eat her dinner tonight.
Hooray for good days!
