Took Jorge to pets @ home today he happily greeted everyone, I always bring treats and people enjoy giving him one when they stop to pet him anyways there was one lady that he refused point blank to be petted by- he kept moving his head away- backing up - and lying down, he would not even accept a treat from her!! She said she lost her dog yesterday it had a heart attack I kinda felt really bad that Jorge was having none of her attempts to pet him- but got me wondering if he could smell on her that her dog died yesterday??? maybe it frightened him?? maybe he just didn't like her?? just thought it was very strange behaviour! what do you think?

I think that we should learn to trust the instinct of our dogs. I think that they are a better judge of people than we are.

Carla - I've no idea, but I do trust their instincts... he obviously did not like the vibes he was getting from her. Thule has reacted similarly to people, mostly a reaction to the voice or the way she's approached; she finds some people intimidating... but these people are few, and far between.

I think that we should learn to trust the instinct of our dogs. I think that they are a better judge of people than we are.

yeh I totally agree she seemed a bit miffed that he wasn't letting her pet him and kept saying "are you not used to people then??" maybe he sensed that she was quite emotional too??

I don't know, but the fact that she regarded her "late" pet as a pain, her criticism, although mild, of Jorge, and the fact that she immediately bought another dog....I think Jorge Knows Best. Give him a smooch for me too!

Oliver has reacted to a few people this way, too. It's embarassing when it happens but for whatever reason, he doesn't want to do it.

Smart smart Jorge, what an excellent barometer he has of a person's character. You are lucky to have such an intuitive Newf to let you know when to avoid certain humanimals!

I trust my boy when he does things like this....the other day we kept passing the same guy while walking on a bushed in trail. The last time we saw him, Sulley's hackles went way up and we high tailed it out of there.

Seeing that Jorge is such a friendly guy, I would go with his instincts. She might have just lost a dog, but most dogs tend to have an affinity to sad people, so she has something else going on Ronnie

The lady was most likely at the vet with her Lab. the day before, and Jorge was reacting the smell of the vets office on the lady's clothing.

I always watch the behaivior and trust the signs of my animals. I have not met one person that they have been "off" on. If they don't trust them.. I'm leary.

My gut just tells me .. if he acted that way. their MAY be more to that story than she is stating.

I think it was more about her as a person than the fact that her dog just died. Shortly after our first newf was gone I saw a newf in Petco and practically threw myself at him. After explaining to his owner, she decided not to call security and that wonderful dog let me hug and cuddle him for awhile.

Also could be she was still upset over the loss of her dog, and she was emoting something that he didn't like or feeling her pain. Possible I would think.
