What cool tricks can your Newfie do?

Doc's Mom

New member
Doc and I are in advanced training and the last class we are supposed to do an "Advanced Trick" It is hard for me because Doc doesn't seem to be food motivated. I have tried liver treats and Carvers chicken among lots of other ones. I tried to get him to roll over and he did it by accident once, now he doesn't even come close.

So I would like to know what cool tricks can your Newf do?
Of course if you have any pictures or video that would be even better.

Will Doc retrieve and/or carry things? You can do a lot of fun things with that.
Ebony always gets her bib before dinner. She also knows which stocking cap is mine. We keep our caps/gloves in a box by the door and she will go over to the box and get my hat when I say "get Mom's hat".
So if Doc likes to carry things you can probably work with that.

I'm not sure it's a trick or anything special that Tsunami does, but we end up with a pool to swim in in our kitchen/living room after he dunks his feet in his water bowl and proceeds to spread it all over the house. Hey the kids like it, a homemade slippy slide. :whistling:

I wouldn't teach him to roll over.....for fear of bloat.

Does he have a favorite toy that he likes and goes crazy over? Might be better motivation than food.

And, just like with obedience, work with him on the trick when he's hungry. That might entice him more to take the treat.

Skylar carries in the groceries......

and my daughter (who is 8) taught her when you tell her down she gives paw......totally mixed up my training..(it oly took me 3 years to get a good down out of her..now we are back to the beginning and it only took my daughter 1 night to reverse it..LOL)...thats what I get for working in the evenings they play with "MY" dog...lol....

Riki can swim in the toilets when the lids are left up, amazingly hubby and son blame each other when that happens!
that's her cool trick. and then giving you "special" kisses afterwards....ewwwwww

Tug plays dead.
I "shoot" him "Bang" with my finger and he slooooowly lowers himself to the floor, then prone. It takes a few 'bullets', but he gets there. Then he lays, waiting, sometimes moving until I say: "Dead dogs don't move". Then he's still... I'll lift up my arms and cry, like the proverbial mad scientist, "HE'S ALIVE!" and up he jumps for the kisses and treats he knows are coming... *I* didn't teach him this, but take full advantage of it

They can make a new toy disappear in the blink of an eye!

Ursa can sort of play dead. If you shoot her when she is already in a down position, she will roll on over onto her side or back and play dead.
Fargo and Sadie don't know any tricks unless you want to call seeing how muddy they can get out in the wet backyard (been raining for three days now in Dallas) and seeing how quick they can make the cats disappear by chasing them (bored in the house) a trick.

Rollover is Winston's trick.
I guess that's purty lame.

Liz
It's not lame if your dog can't do it! Tug can't!
He can play 'Trust' (not touch a treat till I say "Paid for") catch a treat off his nose, circle, high fives, shake paws, speak, ring the bell to go outside, and he's learning to crawl. But he still won't roll over!
:tequila: What's your secret???

Hugo does roll over, play dead, waves (high five) with either paw, does bouncy bouncy (hops up and down on his front legs), find it, and speak. Piper is the Queen of Take, Hold, and give, but I haven't taught her much else.

The closest thing we do is I have Boris sit and then I ask "Who do you love best?" and he puts his paw on me. Hubby doesn't think it's as cute as I do.

Tonka's trick is that he knows EXACTLY when it's time to eat. I swear he's got a little clock inside of him that even adjusts itself to daylights savings time

Vinnie wakes me up at the EXACT same time (within a 5 minute range) every morning to go out and walk. Its like he can tell time.

Annabelle's trick are all agility related, which is her favorite "game".
She stands by herself on the seesaw and just rocks it up and down. She also does a full pirouette on the planks. She started this by herself and now you can ask for it. The seesaw bit is "rock" and the plank bit is "pirouette". We have been using this to "showoff" in her class. Because initially we were told newfs were not that good at agility. But our dogs actually play on our mini agility course by choice. Especially the "table", the I am higher then you game............
If your not into agility, what about carrying a basket or a rolled up newspaper for you. Or a fetch your leash for me?............
