Waiting...and Waiting for a Puppy

Oh how I've wanted another Newf puppy... I'd like to share with you what I've gone through with one particular breeder in Europe who has me on her list. Just before her female got pregnant I asked if she would accept me on her list. She didn't answer me directly, but she asked me to friend her on facebook. I believe her to be well respected in the Newf community so I knew I would have to gain her trust. I flooded her inbox with every training certificate Chumley has ever earned. I believe no less than 6, including CGC and TDI. I sent her his neutering certificate to show her I had no intention of breeding plus I waited until he was 2 yrs. to do so. I sent her documentation showing that I've had him insured for accident/illness since he was a puppy. I sent her pictures of him on dog vacations and get togethers and explained that my dogs go with us on vacation or else one of us stays home with them. She finally accepted me on her list and explained 2 breeder friends got first pick of litter. Her female was pregnant in March and gave birth in June. She knew how excited I was, but had to tell me there were only 3 puppies which were all spoken for. She asked me if I would be willing to wait as she would breed her one last time after the vet said she was cleared. This will be her 3rd and final litter. I was willing to wait. She just contacted me to tell me she went into heat (2-3 months too early), but she did not have the heart to breed her so soon after giving birth to puppies in June. She was very apologetic and truthful explaining she may not have puppies until next Sept. depending on her cycle and If she takes. She also told me she would understand if I was out of patience. If that was the case, she would like to help me search for another puppy. That offer alone told me to have patience and stay with her. Meanwhile, she sends me pics of the 3 puppies as they grow. They're beautiful and healthy and I get an idea of what mine might look like someday as the same sire will be used. I've read on forums where people have had to wait up to 3 years for their puppy, I just never imagined I'd be one of them.

There are nice breeders and litters in the US. Since you are looking for a family pet, you don't need a specific size, pedigree, structure or show/ working attitude, etc.

Good luck with your wait.for some reason pups seem to fall into our laps and l am not saying they are the best bred but after the last two all l want now is healthy.

If this breeder is your choice then its worth the waiting and it gives you more funtime with Chumley.

With Luna and Raven l was lucky l got to see them every week and follow their progress.

I had to wait for my Yussie, as My Breeder only breeds on litter per year........She is worth the wait. Such a happy naughty, delightful girl

This just gives you more time to spend with your grown-up puppies. Is there anything you can do with 2 adult dogs that you wouldn't be able to do with a new puppy along? I'd try and take advantage of those, if you can! While we were waiting for Orca, we took lots of weekend trips, because we knew they'd be hard to organize with a puppy along. :)

I understand that the US as of a month or two ago, has new restrictions on the importation of puppies. The puppy must have it's rabies vaccine (12 wks.) & then can not enter the US until 30 days post vaccination. Therefore, the pup would be 16 wks. old. I saw a link in one of the discussions on FB & will see if I can find it again.

I was aware of the new restrictions regarding the importation of puppies and rabies vaccinations. However, this puppy would be coming from a rabies free country. My puppy would be exempt with proper documentation stating he was born and stayed in the rabies free country prior to shipping.
Lynn...Please don't be upset I chose outside the U.S. My first contact was with a U.S. breeder by email. She never responded. I realize they are busy. Of course I could have pursued a breeder by attending shows hoping to make a contact, but that's not my interest. You are correct in that I'm searching for a puppy for a family situation, but it was originally for my friend whose Newf died at the age of 3 yrs of lymphoma. She was devastated and wanted him back. I promised her I'd find her another brown that had a piece of her Newf as her breeder is deceased. I studied his pedigree and that's what lead me to Europe. As it turns out, this breeder's bitch and the intended sire are both descended from Hannibal di Borgoleonardo who is my friend's Newf's great grandfather. So, you see, I found a piece of her late Newf. This may sound silly, but it meant a lot to her. Once I connected my friend to this breeder, I began conversing with her in hopes that I too could have one of her puppies. Sorry so long, but this was actually the short version.

Gives you time to go visit the breeder in Europe and actually meet some of their dogs :)! Lets hope you'll get the pup in Sept!

ps. Hannibal is the 13th most used newfoundland sire in the world, having produced 300+ offspring, so you'll be undoubtedly be able to find his offspring in especially brown lines even if this specific litter wouldn't plan out. Good luck though :)

Let's see...Chumley was in Canada last month for Newfstock plus a Bernese Mt. Dog draft workshop in Maryland and this month will be the Newf get together at Ocean City. I'd say we're squeezing it all in! I can't wait to meet you Courtnie and of course, Orca!
