Someone recently reached out to me because one of the threads I started about Hemingway's crazy, out of control, rabid "episodes" sounded just like her puppy. And she wanted reassurance that Hemingway had grown out of it and therefore so would her pup.

And I got to thinking....I haven't started a thread on here in quite some time...and haven't needed behavioral advice...because, as ALL of YOU reassured me...(ATTN ALL PUPPY MOMS AND DADS) Hemingway grew out of it!

He is 18 months old in a couple of weeks. I can't believe that only a short year ago, I spent most of my days on an emotional roller coaster, one second madly in love with him and the next, cursing the day he was born (I kid, I kid...sort of) :D

Seriously, those were dark, dark days of puppyhood. But I am overjoyed to report that (with consistency, patience and work) he has become the amazing, sweet, loving, loyal, kind-hearted dog I wanted when I got a Newfie...and then some! He is a soulmate. A shadow. A comforting hug when I need one. The house comedian (constantly making my husband and I laugh our fool heads off). He is intelligent, affectionate, and so easy-going. I love giving him a happy life....because he gives us so much joy.

I threw around some negative-nellie statements on here during those days (ie: "if I'm ever crazy enough to get another newfie," etc etc) But now Doug and I wonder if we could ever live without one.

So, for those of you out there in tears, covered in bruises and cuts, fearing you have the spawn of the devil in your little furball....take my word for it, it gets better.....WAY better!!! :D And big thanks to all of you who reassured me and consoled me and told me to hang in there. :hugs:

What a wonderful post! I couldn't agree more with what you wrote. I, too....made the same remarks. And now here I am with second one. And, I'd do it all again.

Has it already been 18 months? I haven't added it up lately! I agree with you 100%. Gilly and I still have some training issues to work on ("stay" and "no" seem foreign to her) but I can't believe how much she's changed even in just the last month or so. The girl I was literally afraid to cuddle (because cuddles lasted 1 minute and attack puppy/dog lasted 20 mins following) is now the biggest snuggle bug. I literally had to get Mark to help me escape her cuddles after 45 minutes yesterday! (she was lying on my lap and I was stuck under her...). And when I stop cuddling she whines for more! For me, this is the opposite of my puppy. Sometimes her craziness made me laugh but I'm so happy for this new sweet girl who is so full of love. Did I mention I had my nieces and nephews over all weekend and she didn't once tackle them and knock them to the ground!!? She's still on watch for that, but my relief was indescribable. Loving these "new" dogs of ours.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Even the smallest bit of reassurance makes me, and hopefully other puppy owners, feel that much better. I have hope that my gremlin (as we so affectionately call him, named after the movie, not the car) will turn into an angel after all.

It takes a lot of training but even our hellraiser learnt to pull back a little though even at 4 years old he was still the most stubborn devil going but when he is good he's very good. Beau is the ony dog l know who has mastered opening the microwave .

Still l know l always forgave him as he always had so much energy and that was always his main problem, burn the energy off and snuggly lovebug.

I was the luckiest Newf mom ever. Max and I only had one issue and it was addressed and taken care of quickly. :) Charlie was another story. If we hadn't had Max to teach and run off some of Charlie's energy, I would have sworn off Newfs (maybe). Best move I made was to have a young big brother and both of them in (separate) training classes during Charlie's wild puppy years.

I've only had one Newf pup and she was an angel, but I clearly remember saying, more than once, that I'd NEVER get another Berner. Now I look at my smart, gorgeous, happy boy and wonder how I could ever NOT have another Berner. Pups are certainly a lot of work, but they are worth it! Thanks for your post!!

Glad everything worked out; my 1st newf was exceptional, the most well behaved dog ever, then Tiki came along, aka "Cujo", but he eventualy grew out of his crazy stage & is the best of the best; only occassional bouts of craziness.

My 5 yr old lab, Lucy, is short for lucifer. Because she was. I never thought her puppy years would end. Now she is the calmest, sweetest dog, except on leash. The vizsla(or dog on crack) is 3 and has been reenergized by the 14 week old Newfie-Zeus. Until you have seen a vizsla have a "running fit" inside you haven't seen electricity in action. She jumps over the couch then through the dining room, straight up 6 feet in the air and turns and does it all again. however she is so graceful and agile she could do this in a china shop through a house of cards. Zeus on the other hand is so clumsy and bull headed he looks like a football player dropping his head down and charging through - anything. He knocks everything over slides on his belly through the kitchen, digs in his water bowl. And makes a mess! But we have lived through 3 kids, 4 labs, 2 vizslas and I guess we will make it through the Newfie too.

I remember in a fit of fury telling my sister that my Newf puppy was "ruining my life!" She still laughs about that to this day, as do I.

YEA Hemi! Mason is also 18 months old and he is much better but still chases the cat :( and gets wound up with my son. He is a constant work in progress! He does follow me everywhere and will knock any one down to get at a tomato if I am cutting one up!! LOL! He keeps me on my toes for sure!
