Tough vacation

Haven't been here for a while, been a rough year. We decided to take a vacation last week. Had a tire problem in AL and had to have a new tire put on at a WalMart (only place in small town with the right size). Would not allow Thunder into any area with AC. Short version- he got heat stroke very badly. Stopped at vet who put him in ice and water, (first temp reading 109.4) got his temp to normal, said needed 24 hour care and found some only 1.5 hours away. We packed him in cold wet towels. New place agreed his chances were slim but took great care and did a marvelous job. Went in on Fri., came out on Tues with no discernible after effects.

When I first joined NN someone advised another Newby to feed the best food you could afford and take out pet insurance. I took both to heart. Don't know yet what the insurance will pay but anything will be a help- it was just a shade over $6K.

If you are ever on I-65 in S. Alabama and need a vet try to make it to Evergreen south of Greenville. Evergreen Vet is about 200 yards off the Interstate. If you are on the east side of Montgomery, AL and need help- Carriage Hills Animals Hospital is on Eastern By-Pass just north of the junction with Southern By-Pass. 24/7/365 service

Our boy seems totally back to himself. One more blood check to run next week. We are thankful beyond measure for the advice a long time ago and for 2 very good vet clinics.

Glad to see you back here Emmie Lou but so sorry your vacation was so awful and Thunder so sick, thank goodness you found a good vet. Must have been so scary.
Great that he is back to his usual self.

Thank you SO much for passing along this information! My sister lives in Montgomery. I go and visit every so often and take my Newf. Carriage Hills is about 1 mile from her house and I know EXACTLY where it is located.

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. I can imagine how scary that was :-(

Glad he's feeling better and here's hoping your insurance company comes through.

They agree with me that he probably has la-par but don't think it's time for surgery because of the risks associated with that (aspiration pneumonia). We just have to keep him as cool as possible. I am cutting off most of his coat in stages this week. We need some sort of permanent solution to the tile problem we have too. Rug, pads, boots etc are not working. He will not lie on anything but the tile and his boots worked great for 2 days, not they are not working.

Oh Emmie Lou, that stinks. So glad he's doing better. My lab had LP and heat stroke comes on very quickly.

I'm not second-guessing you, and I'm sure the situation was complex, but I would have absolutely WRECKED any WalMart employee who tried to stop me from bringing Loki in out of the heat. I'm extremely nice 99% of the time, but if you get between me and my dog's health, your life is forfeit and I will feed what remains of your soul to the Newfie.

Sorry you had to go through that :(

One of the reasons I dispise Walmart. If Sam Walton was alive today, that would have never happened. I'll bet he's spinning in his grave. His vision of Walmart is much different than the Walmart of today.

Thunder update- all seems well, except for general weakness in hind end. Have ordered a Help Em Up which should be here Monday. Hopeful that will allow us to get him in the van to the vet for his blood checkup. He comes every morning for his biscuit, barks at all the things the others do and seems himself except for the back leg problem. He simply will not lie on a mat or rug if there is any other choice. Am working at designing special boots for him. 3 different materials to try- rug non slip underlayment, rubbermaid shelf paper and the material they put on children's footed PJs. Watching him trying to use boots made for outdoor surfaces has given us lots of ideas so we'll keep trying different ones until something works.
