Prayers for Sunshine.......
Now coughing in older dogs can also be a sign of Cardiac failure. It is actually what happened to our little Nugget at the age of about ten. he lived to be fifteen with some supportive meds.
I hope you gat at least some answers, so some treatment can start, Ronnie

Hi all,
Long and stressfull day. The vet did a lot of x-rays of her chest as well as repeating her senior panel. He said that her heart looked "okay", that her lungs didn't sound that bad however he heard the cough when palpating her trachea. He did see some "whispy spots" on her lungs. I asked if she could have cancer, he seemed pretty positive that this was not cancer. He held off on a different antibiotic until the radiologist reads the x-rays. Then, depending on what the radiologist says we might do the trachial wash. Obviously, the Leviquin did not clear this up as it did for Rosie. He also said it was possible that she had a touch of pneumonia but seemed reluctant to settle on anything. She threw up a bit later when we got home and it was all mucus - brownish colored. She has not coughed nearly as much as Rosie did at the end of her ordeal. Also, Rosie would cough up white foamy or clear stuff. Ironically, Sunny has not coughed since she hurled. So they will call tomorrow after they get the radiologist report and we will go from there. I was very concerned that we were dealing with congestive heart failure but do feel a bit more relieved about that now. Jeannie, I am thinking that is what we have going on here, lung infection.

This whole thing has been so odd. First Rosie had kennel cough then Sunny seemed to ge a touch of it. She got antibiotics before Rosie did. Then Rosie went on antibiotics and was on them for 40 days. Two rounds of doxiciline & two rounds of Levequin. Sunny had a round of Doxi, A round of amoxicillin & now just finished two rounds of Levequin. She has not been on them continually as Rose has been. I have never had dogs that were this sick. I am very perplexed about how long it has all been going on and the amount of drugs it took to get Rosie well.

Thanks so very much for all of the posts. It is so comforting to know that you are all wishing Sunny well and sending her lots of love. She is such a delight - hence the D after her name in my avatar. Lucy has called her that as long as I can remember. Her other saying whenever Sunshine enters a room. "The big black bear with the fluffy hair is here" And she is, laying on my feet, lightly snoring as I type.:)

So now it's "wait and see". Hoping that the radiologist has a good report. Please continue to update, as many of us are watching this and praying for her.

I'm glad she's home and hoping you get an answer soon. Any chance they're been exposed to mold, maybe at the barn? My old Newf-Huskie had similar symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with aspergillus which took a long time to treat. The vet thought she may have gotten it from (ewwww) eating moldy manure and aspirating some spores while nom-ing.

At first my vet said Sara had kennel cough. I don't think it ever was KC. I think she had the bacterial lung infection the whole time. None of my other dogs coughed so I felt sure it was not KC because it is spread so easily.

Well, the good news is her lungs are clear. The radiologist didn't see anything on her films. So, my vet is putting in a call to the Internal Medicine specialist to discuss whether we do the trachial wash and culture her or do a blood test called a pcr which is preliminary chain reaction. This test could tell us what microplasma organism is growing. Okay, I think I got that right. She seemed a bit brighter today. My parents are here for a few days (they live 90 miles from me) and Sunny was ecstatic to see her G-ma & G-pa. She woo wooed and kissed and sat on feet(big sign of affection) She got lots of special love today and I do think it cheered her up. Rose provided the entertainment with Sunny's SS present - the bird & her barking reindeer that plays We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Hopefully, will know more on Monday.

Here's a link to mycoplasma:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycoplasma

Years ago, I had mycoplasma. I coughed for nine months with it, before an emergency doctor (not my usual ones) saw me and properly diagnosed it. I kept being treated for bronchitis. It would start to clear up, I'd run out of antibiotics, and it would come right back...worse than before. After nine months of coughing my head off, hubby took me to the emergency clinic one Saturday night, where I saw a different doctor. She came into the waiting room to get me, saying "I can tell, by listening to you cough, what you have." Sure enough, it was mycoplasma. Treated NOT with small dose for 10 days, but with double that dose for almost a month. Finally cleared it up.

So, make sure the vet is aggressive with the treatment, if that's what it is.
