Seamus redeems himself. Just a little brag.

In five days, I'm leaving the teaching job I've had for 25 years and taking a new position at a new cyber school in my area. I accepted the job less than one month into the school year and hadn't anticipated how much my leaving would affect my students as I hadn't established a relationship with them yet. This past week has been a rough one. The IEP students (I spend the most time with them) have been tearing up over little things, acting out, etc and it dawned on me that they were struggling with the upcoming unknown (and they just might actually miss me!!)

Anyway, I share Seamus and Bentley stories and photos on a daily basis. They think I'm a little nutty, but that's ok. Many have been asking for me to bring them in. With how emotional everyone has been, I thought today would be a good day. Bentley is not ready yet, so Seamus got to spend the day with just me (and several hundred students).

I am just so proud of my boy who has been an incredible brat lately!!! He was pet and hugged and brushed and walked for 8 hours and was so, so incredibly good and tolerant the entire time. Some boys tried to teach him how to roll over....it was hysterical. The life skills class came to my room to visit and one boy, who has never initiated a conversation, started to tell me how he expected that he was coming to see a stuffed animal that looked like a bear and was surprised at how big Seamus was. He also talked and talked about how soft he was :)

One boy with emotional issues got on the floor with him and used him as a pillow. Another student whom I have never seen smile was "training" him and got him to catch a piece of his apple he was sharing with Seamus. I got the GREATEST picture of a huge smile. If I can figure out how to get the pic from the phone to photobucket to here, I will share it.

Another young man has been a real thorn in my side lately. I never anticipated him looking for excuses to find us throughout the building so he could spend time with Seamus. I took a photo of the two of them and got his cell number so I could send him the photo. When I left for the day, I got a text from him saying "thanks, this was the best day ever"

My boy knew who needed him most no matter what class we were in. He obeyed every command from them, ate all their treats (that I brought in ) and just showed them the love! ALL day we heard, "I love him, he's so cute, look at that slobber, WATCH OUT he's shaking his head, etc" I am so very proud of him. Eight hours was a long time to be perfect, but he was.

I just had to share....thanks for reading!

Oh that is so awesomely heartwarming to hear! Seamus brought out the natural joy and love in those struggling kids and showed how attuned he is! Good good boy and Suse you have so much to be proud!

Hope to see all the pix and hope Seamus gets more opportunities to bring out the best in kids again.

That's awesome Sue!! What a heartwarming story. I'm sure the kids will be talking about it for a long long time!! You'll have to go back and visit them with the boys sometime before the school year is over!

Wonderful story, wonderful day. We had a summer school class that actually did teach Blizzard to roll over. Once she "got it," they had her rolling all over the carpet. There is a place in the heart of children for most animals, but when they see a Newf for the first time it is magic.

Absolutely! Take Seamus (and Bentley) back if you can. Their placcid expressions and human-like eyes invite connection and their size combined with the tactile experience of their soft coats make them ideal to snuggle. There is something so inherently compassionate and nonjudgemental that these dogs possess that gets to even the most hardcore troubled souls.

What a very special day for you and Seamus. You must feel so proud, special, loved and appreciated. Seamus obviously knew instinctively how special he could be to these kids and felt rewarded. You too, have discovered how your love of your boys had permeated to the kids with your sharing of your love and caring for both your dogs and the kids to them.

My friend whose newfs did therapy work, used to go to a special needs group home and it was so rewarding and often comical. One fellow who never, ever. spoke or showed any interest in anything used learned to like brushing her newf and the when it was time to leave would try and put the brushed hair back on the dog :) It was the only time he showed any animation.

Animals, and I feel (a bit predjudiced LOL), especially Newfs, have such an ability to connect with not only everyone, but especially those with with profound disabilities. Newfs seem to have a very special sense when with those who are troubled, whether emotionally or physically.
I hope, for the kid's sake, you will be able to maintain some contact with them :)
Your story gives me a very warm feeling. Thank you. :hugs:

(Bentley may surprise you in the future.......obviously he has passed the big hurdle.....your husband

LOL! I was hoping everyone would forget what escape artists they are!

I hope to take them back someday. I didn't take Bentley this time because it would have been too long of a day for him and when he's anxious, he drools like he has rabies and I figured all I would hear all day is "Ewwww, scream, shudder, etc".

Bentley WILL be making appearances this weekend at Kris Kindlemarkt and Olde Time Christmas celebrations, though!

I had to laugh at that! My boy, Tucker can drool like that when he's anxious, too. All foamy and disgusting, but surprisingly, he doesn't drool like that when I take him to schools with me, so maybe Bentley won't do it either. What a wonderful day for everyone and Seamus made it that much more memorable! What a wonderful boy!

I have chills reading your story. It is just so typical of our sweet Newfs to simply know things and to react the way people need them to. What a great day for everyone.
