Thanks soooo much for posting this, Peter! This is just great to read! Particularly, after Rosie's demise which was thoughtless! JMVHO!

It's about time a great story :) He needs a little something just to let him know how much he's appreciated!

Folks at Newf Friends Newfoundland Rescue thought there was something familiar about Lucy and sure enough she was one of ours.

Here's some more detail from her dog Mom:

And just as things seemed to be calming down for both Mohan and Lucy, Lucy took a flying run at some ducks on the pond at Humber Bay park at Lakeshore and Park Lawn, ran right out on improbably thin pond ice and went right through! I thought I would die. On the count of 3 she surfaced but couldn't get a strong enough grip on the ice to pull herself up. She was about 20 meters out, impossible to get. I called 911. 2 firetrucks and 2 cruisers came, but all without the gear to get that far out. She was in for more than 30 minutes, howling and wailing and occasionally slipping - just those great Newfie feet holding on. Finally, we realized the firefighter's boat was not going to arrive in time, so a cop ripped out the back seat of his cruiser to use as a floating device, stripped down, and pushed the seat before him on his hands and knees. He was tied to the guys on the shore and dragged Lucy up and out. Then they all heaved them back. It was reported today on 680 news! She was freezing of course, and the cop had to go to hospital for hyper-extending his arm. ... Our vet was closed so we dried her vigorously, fed her, wrapped her in warm towels fresh out of the drier and she's fine. Of course she is - she's made for that stuff! I'm surprised i didn't have a heart attack!

Agree 100%. Many of us have sent thank you cards to Constable Vanderhart including an elementary school's Social Justice Committee and a young autistic boy.

With my thank you card I included a fridge magnet picture of a Newfoundland dog so that Constable Greg would have a lasting memory of his heroic deed and the appreciation of those of us who love Newfoundland dogs.

If you would like to add your voice to those commending this police officer for his resourcefulness, dedication to service and heroism, you can mail to this address:

So nice to see my previous "comrades in arms" being the heroes I knew them to be after working alongside them and being part of their family for over 30 years. 30 years.. a lifetime... I miss them.... Thanks Peter for posting this.. so often we only hear the negative... :hugs:
