Lost car to Sandy, now have to get a new one;
looking for a small suv, any recommendations?
last car lasted 12 years, kept in a heated garage,
it was perfect.

That stinks. I'm sorry! Glad you guys are ok though!

Not an SUV, but I have the Jetta SportWagon TDI (Diesel). I LOVE IT. It's low enough that Maggie can get in without any issues, and has tons of space. It actually has more cargo space than a lot of small SUV's. I get about 40 miles/gal since its a TDI. I had a 2010 on lease that I turned in last weekend and got a 2013. It's nice, fun to drive, and practical.

If an SUV is a must-have, I really liked the Honda CRV I had before.

Good luck in your search!

I have a Honda Element. Plenty of space for more than one dog. It's actually so ugly, it's cute! Very boxy looking.

20 - 21 mpg. around town.

You can remove both back seats, if you so choose. Or you can flip them up on both sides.

You can also use the Element for camping, if you are into camping. I am not. I just wanted space for my dog/s.

For smaller SUV like I would go with that VW Wagon or a Subaru Forester. Lots of room in there for a Newf.

Interesting thread. I just got rear ended in a Volvo wagon. They're now determining if the car has been totaled. I will probably get another Volvo wagon. My Newf was in the cargo area when my car was rear ended at about 30+ MPH. Didn't suffer even a scratch and the cargo area is now sagging to the point its almost dragging the ground.

I have a Nissan Xterra and a Mazda 3 Hatchback. As far as SUV's go, I wouldn't really recommend the Xterra for a Newf mom. Kayak has a hard time getting up and down in it unless he uses a ramp. The backdoors don't open super wide and the back seat sits really high. He can make it if he is really motivated, but it takes a lot of umph to get him in. The Mazda 3 Hatchback (I realize is not an SUV) is awesome. Great space, great mileage, great for outdoors, Kayak loves it.

Well we bought a subaru forrester almost two years ago, thought it would be a good hairy kids car. Because of the gas prices my honey wanted to trade in our explorer which I loved for the subaru. I should have looked closer the seats fold down but don't meet the back seat so there is a gap. The roof is higher then most other cars so we had to buy a new pet barrier but because of the gap between the seats it wasn't secure.

We ended up going and trading in our old focus wagon in on a ford escape almost 2 weeks after we bought the subaru for our trip to Ga. I love it! After removing the back seat head rest they fold down and touch the back of the front seats, no gap. The pet barrier works, nice and secure and Gingers car seat fits on the arm rest console it didn't with the subaru.

Thanks for the input; the top 4 that we are looking at in order are CRV, RAV4, CX-5, Subaaru Forestor; 2nd choices are Nissan Rogue, Subaru Accutrac, Hyundai Tuscon,. The more we look/research, the more the crv comes up (thats what You said Vin, DawnMarie). Need a car soon, driving this Ram 3500 all over is getting old, for work, ok, but all the time is a pain, ai never thought I would saythis.

I think you know what I say...Honda if your looking for the long haul :) Right now used prices are stupid crazy so if you can get new make sure you get a deal on the interest rates (I think it's the clearance event going on right now so great deals)....I have a saleman friend over at Coast....no haggle straight up price, no games. Hyundia's have come a long way.

I used to be in the car business and managed dealerships that sold Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes and Nissan, Oh and GM (have to go American if you need a BIG truck/van/SUV).

I'd highly recommend not buying new, but to look at Honda and Toyota....and consider one of their Certified Used. They both have excellent Certified programs! Plus you can get an add on extended service contract pretty inexpensively on their Certified vehicles.

The older CRV has more space than the newer ones. The RAV4...eh. I was never as impressed with it as I have been the CRV. (And I have all Toyotas and one Volvo wagon). I agree with Brad too...the Volvo wagons are wonderful cars. We have an older V70 and it just keeps on going. The Element was a hit with dog people. It was named the dog car of the year for several years running. So if you can FIND one....take a good look at it.

The reason to buy "used" versus "new" is that the original owner has eaten the depreciation on the vehicle and you get a lot more for your money. Most are off-lease now anyway.

But...make SURE it's certified. It does make a difference.
