I'm sorry this has taken me so long, but it's been hard: Our very first Newfoundland. Kala showed Barry and I how much fun a dog could be. What a complete clown, bursting with personality. Social butterfly, I called her. Sassafras. Kala-Bala. The first dog we took camping. The first dog that got me more involved with Rescue work, altho it was outside the water as the goofy girl really never learned to swim. We also dabbled in therapy work too. She liked to grab your arm so I doubt we could have gotten her certified. But, that just goes to show you how loving she could be.
Kala was the first dog that showed us how fast and smart and quickly she could learn. Tell her once, and that pretty much was it. A little kid on four legs who could talk back to us. How many things I never realized until we had Kala! I swear she could read my mind…
She started hemorrhaging last Sunday morning, and again Monday morning, and by then, didn't want regular food, just treats. Still seemed herself, but sleeping more than not. Then Tues. she didn't get up when I got home from work, and started needing our help to get outside. We were up with her most of the nite Tues. as she couldn't get comfortable. The house was at 63 degrees and she was still panting. So we knew it was time and helped her to the Bridge last Wednesday. morning.
Barry and I keep justifying our actions/decisions but understand we just couldn't help her any longer. I refused to have a negative last memory of her. No. No way.
Now we have to get thru missing her. I knew this was going to hurt. Now I know this is going to hurt forever.
I had hoped to include some pictures but I just can't bring myself that far yet. And there's so many people I can thank that were also involved with creating such wonderful memories that I will cherish always. Because of Kala, we have so many wonderful friends and acquaintances.
I will never, ever forget the opportunity Rescue gave us to embrace such a wonderful girl.
I will never, ever forget Kala. Rest well, sweet girl...
