I just check Gunny's mouth and it looks like all his stitches are out. I am so upset. He was re sticked Thursday, I had him checked yesterday and it looked great. I looked in his mouth just now and it looks like raw meat. I am waiting for the vet to open at 8:30 and I am taking him in. I cant believe this is happening.

Just got back from the vet. They think Gunny had a bad reaction to the stitches and tomorrow he will be having surgery AGAIN!!!. This time they are using different material.
Please keep him in your prayers.

How awful! This is about the third time in the last few weeks that I've heard of dogs reacting to stitches.

Can you find out what kind they used? It may be valuable information for the rest of us!!!

Thanks!

Good Lord.. I feel so bad for you and Gunny. This poor dog sure has had his share and I know how discouraged and upset you are. We will all say some more prayers..

Okay, here's your probably stupid question for the day....does he HAVE to be re-stitched? If he is having reactions to the stitches and trying to get to them, will he not be better off left to heal on his own? Would that not result in less injury to the mouth in the long run?
Where are/were the stitches exactly? Just curious...
So sorry your boy is having such a difficult time with this....Hang in there, both of you..Hugs to you both....

Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts.
Tomorrow morning Gunny is going back to the vet. I think it needs to be re-stitched again because he had 3 teeth removed and it is a large area. The bleeding has stopped so I hope that is a good sign.
The dental tech told me that they would use a different type of suture.
Keep the prayers coming.

So true! I've never heard of so many Newfs having reactions to sutures lately. It's a bit scary. I doubt these are isolated incidents....there must be a bigger issue. I'd love to know more about them to see if there are complaints. Wouldn't surprise me if there some sort of class-action suit brewing.

Just got back from the vet. At first he thought he should just let it heal without any stitches but he changed his mind and is putting in a few stitches using the heaviest suture material. They used a very thin suture the last two times. Why they would do that is beyond me.
Anyway he said it will be a quick procedure and if it doesn't hold it will have to heal open and Gunny will be kept on antibotics for a few weeks. I don't even know if they are charging me for this but at this point I really don't care. I want Gunny to be well and not make daily trips to the vet. keep the prayers coming.

I brought Gunny home this afternoon. I had a long talk with the vet and he said if the stitches come out again we are just going to leave it alone. It will just take longer to heal. The vet also said there is no point in putting him in the halo or "cone" which is really good as Gunny was so uncomfortable.
Gunny is hungry so I have been feeding him small meals. I am still giving him tramdol.
Still keep the prayers coming and thanks for all the support. This has been such a stressful week for me and Gunny.
