I have 2 customers whose dog got lepto. One, a newf, died. It was very strange because the strain of lepto he had is usually only found in Hawaii. I'm in Ohio.

Bloodtests so far show virulent strain of leptospirosis. So we are all going on antibiotics including Raven and Luna as a precautionary measure.

My poor boy wasnt innoculated last year because Max and Jessie were so ill.l always thought at his age he would have built up a good immune system and he would have been reinnoculated this year again.
Don't beat yourself up. It may even be a strain that the shot would not cover. Snuffles lost a dog friend to such a event. It was a front page newspaper article here. I wrote about it in http://www.newf.net/Forums/showthread.php?t=100833

Thanks for the article.the worst part for us now is the not saying goodbye properly to him.l would have wanted to be with him at the end for his sake .also l wish the vet would have contacted us to tell us he was going downhill .its still a shock as at no point did we ever feel he wasnt going to come home.

His ashes are with his mums now.hopefully its the last death for a while as three in less than a year is a little more than l want to deal with again.

I do know how you feel Victoria, I was not with Yussie at the vet's when she passed, I was on the way to pick her up so we could all go to a larger Vet Hospital .it is am awful feeling, i am just glad we brought her home the night before and did not leave her there and she slept with us as i was worried. It is s hard to just have our dogs .....gone..... I am so sorry, I wished we could make you feel better....you have had such a tough run with your beloved dogs.......:( Ronnie

I am fighting our now former vet for answers.appears he died between 3am and 6am yet we werent told until nearly 10.

One minute its a serious disease, the ne t most dogs dont die from it.
Well if its so serious why wasnt he admitted the minute l took him in first time and just found out he was monitored every 3 hours.not good enough.

Nothing will bring back my goofball but if l can stop it happening to others l will.

So ask your vets what their overnight practices and procedures are.if l had known he would have come home and been checked every hour here.he may not have survived but he would have been more comfortable here .

You bring up a very good point. Our vet has 24/7 emergency care, however, it doesn't mean there is staff with them over night. I agree with you, I'd prefer to have my dog at home, closely monitored, than in the hospital with less monitoring.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your Merlin.
