Male newfie owners: how old before they lifted the leg?

Boatswain marked his territory today with the leg lift and everything...he's only 4.5 months old! Is this normal?

I tend to think it's simply a learned behavior, but I don't know. Byron was socialized with many other male dogs and still did not lift his leg until he was about 9 months. Anybody else have a relatively young pup who lifted his leg?

My Yeti was 6 when he passed and he never lifted his leg. Khabo is 2 1/2 and he squats. Coop is only just over 5 months and he's still squatting.

Maybe it's my house!!! The boys squat here!

Moe first started to lift his leg at 10 months. When we're out at the park he wants to lift his leg and pee on everything, but at home in the yard he both squats and lifts. He just turned 1 year on April 20th.

Ricky still squats like a girl, or actually more like he stretches out and let's it fly. Fortunately he doesn't pee on himself. Every so often he will lift his leg and mark something. He's 2 years and 3 months.

Charlie started really early (must have been around 4 months) ... he NEVER squats, always leg as high as it can go! He also likes to see if he is hitting the "right spot"

Chloe is female but I've had two male dogs a Doberman & a Black Lab.Both dogs never lifted there legs never.I heard once that they learn from another male when they see him lift his leg. They were both neutered also.Interesting makes no rhyme nor reason.LOL

Zacky NEVER lifted his leg, Josh started really early. Both had other male dogs living with them, who did lift their legs . They were/are working dogs who came as adults who lifted their legs everywhere and I taught them not too by using my super water gun (blaster). I hate dogs lifting their legs on the house and car tires. So they know you can do it in the back part of the yard and the paddocks, but not near the house

Merlin started at 15 months, today he both squats & lifts, when he has more he usually squats (in the am), Mickey was 12 months, mostly lifts his let, rarely ever squats, occassionally.

Fargo is 10 months old now and just started to lift his leg last month. He only does that when he's marking. If he really needs to relieve himself he doesn't squat though - he stretches out his legs and stands.

Their all different. My boy Coast started lifting his leg at 12 WEEKS with no other male dogs to copy. Never have had a problem with weeds around the fenceline since.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm surprised by the variance in ages, but that really helps!

Both boys squat in the yard, but lift when there are other scents around (dog park, hiking trails, etc.) They still squat on the beach, though...something about the sand, I think.

Thanks again!

Max was about 9-10 months; Charlie about 7 months. Max will stretch in the yard if he isn't close to anything he feels is worthy of lifting...once Charlie started to lift there was no going back. Our lab still squatted when we got him at 1 year but, within six months started to lift. If there is nothing to lift on....he sort of squats and lifts one leg off the ground (silly lap-a-dor):)

Max started at 10 months and 95% still lifts his leg...dear Marcus is 2 years, 2 months and didn't start until the last 6 months. he is comical because he often goes up to a tree and lifts the outside leg instead...I have a very slow maturing boy!
