Brody the Newf

Curt and Nick went to the mall yesterday and saw a Newfie pup for sale. I'm debating whether or not to take a ride over there to see it. I guess he looks a lot like Brody...

It is a never ending battle with the pet stores and newf pups. Buying them only gives the store the money to buy another. Just going in to look, creates interest, which gives the store the incentive to buy another. Rescue does not buy pups from stores and the mills keep breeding them. The whole thing is heartbreaking and very sad and seems to be a no win situation for all involved except the store and the mill.

Times have changed were we live because Pet stores selling live puppies and kittens have been mostly replaced by Petsmart and Petco. The margin of profit is just not there anymore so now flea markets and want ads seem to be their source of customers. I once bought a sheltie puppy from a private seller and it was not a good experience.

What our local newf club did with pups in the pet store is make up a folder of info on newfs and contact information for the local club that could be shared with potential buyers.

Luckily the one pet store that tried a newf here lost their shirt on it because no one bought him for months and months. I felt sorry for the little guy but it kept them from selling another one.

Back in the late 70's I bought my Old English Sheepdog from a pet store in Montreal. I new absolutely nothing about puppy mills, at the time, and it was a few years later before I did. It still haunts me, thinking about where she may have come from; she was AKC registered and came from somewhere in Kansas. I was lucky with her, she turned out to be a healthy dog and was very sweet and true to her breed. As I said, it still haunts me to this day.

I bought a pom from a pet store about 14 yrs ago. Not aware of puppy mills at the time, just fell in love at the pet store. He was a great dog.

I bought a newfie mix from a pet store about 2 yrs ago. I just couldn't leave her there even though I know why I shouldn't. No win situation.

Do all dogs in a pet store come from puppy mills? And how do you know that to be fact? I have never bought a dog from a pet store but we do look every time we are at the mall. I want them all!!

Most come from puppy mills...via corporations like the Hunte Corp. Hunte pays puppy "farmers/millers" to produce pups for them so they can sell them in pet stores. Nasty business.

SOME (in small mom and pop pet stores) do come from local breeders who have an agreement with the pet store. This isn't as common anymore.

I just wish that ALL pet stores/pet supply stores would be run out of business by the chains like Pet Smart/Petco, who don't sell dogs and cats (yet do have rescue organizations "adoption days" at the stores). It's bad enough that Pet Smart sells birds and rodent type pets...they need to stop that too.

We still have one pet supply store that sells dogs. I don't know how they stay in business, because it's always empty of customers. Pet Smart closed down all of the others in the area. They'll tell you they get their pets from local breeders...NOT TRUE. They're mostly Hunte Corp. puppies.

GOOGLE Hunte Corporation...you'll learn a LOT about the puppy mill/puppy brokering business. Disgusting.
