Nicholas and Evan are both intact males, 7 yrs and 6 yrs. they both have mild SAS and I don't intend to put them under an anaesthetic unless it is absolutely necessary. As they love each other to death and Gracie is spayed I don't have a problem.

I am interested in knowing, why are you asking?

I'm a chicken. Norm will be neutered (eventually, he's only 16 months old) before another male joins our family. I've never had a problem with Norm and any other dog (male/female, intact/altered), but I want to stack the odds in our favour... and I never want to see Norm in any type of altercation.

I know what you mean, we also have a few females in our street that are not spayed and I know they can smell a female in heat for miles around! so I too want to prevent anything but think its good to find out as much information as possible.
thanks shel :)

Orka is 13 months, not neutered. He is maturing too. There is a beagle breeder around the corner and we can sure tell when he has a female in heat. But Orka is learning to live with it. He is a total playbunny at the dog parks and not aggressive. But there is one dog, Meeka, he is sure is in heat, and chasing her (she's a very fast runner and spayed) gives him one heck of an aerobic workout every night.

Orka is getting very strong, huge muscles, very healthy. Will not neuter him because I think he needs all his hormones to grow properly. He is never out of my sight and will not ever be bred or allowed to breed.

Is the morning woody a hormone thing? Do neutered dogs still get it? Knobs and stick all very prominent and hard, but goes away after a few minutes.

Zeus was neutered at age 4 yrs. The girls were spayed as part of the condition of ownership. All were adopted as adults and fully developed before their nip tuck.

My Adam is neutered. He was done at 4 years of age. I can say his personality changed after neutering. He is more aggressive toward some other dogs.

both ours are castrated , Beau due to health issues and constantly damaging his testicles, plus with all his health issues I didn't want to take the chance that he might pass on his genes accidentally.

Didn't make the slightest difference in personality or temperament to them . have had entire males and no issues generally, its the bitch's in thehouse that have given us the most trouble

yeh Stanley gets sores too, the vet said it most likely due to swimming and advised a barrier cream before swimming- yeh I would never be brave enough to live with 2 bitches!lol

thanks for all your input :)

Please do not use the term "castrated".. or "bitches".. It makes for some very nervous Newfs..... Sorry.... back to topic..... :(

I'm interested in these responses as well because we are approaching 18 months. I had always figured we would have him neutered eventually, when I feel he's truly matured. But, I'm getting some opposition to that from, of course, my husband :shocker:
it seems he identifies a bit too much with the subject!

Two males here...one was neutered at 2 years old and the other is 2 years old and intact. Would like to keep him intact but if we add another intact male will have to see how things go.

Elvis is neutered. He was done early - before we joined Newf net and learned better. However, it didn't seem to affect him at all. He'll be three years old this month and has grown up just fine.

The only side effect from his surgery was horrible razor burn. He has very sensitive skin and didn't handle the shave well at all.

First Newf not neutered until 5 y.o. and only because of the abundance of advice from the vet about "possible prostate problems" "will live longer" etc. Didn't make a bit of difference in his personality. And he died at age 10.

Current Newf, Ben, neutered at 2 years. Cost: 6 weeks of misery and $1500. Was sent home without a head cone ("We don't have one big enough and he won't need it") and ripped the stitches open twice, licking them. Vet had to re-stitch and finally I think staple them shut, charging me every time.

Ex-husband went to Pet Smart after second stitching and bought a $20 cone. I didn't even know they sold them there. He wore the thing for 2 1/2 weeks, poor guy, because we had to kennel him while in Europe. Apparently did fine with it, but I felt horrible.

Bottom line: we now have a new vet, and Ben is as mellow as he was BEFORE the surgery. Not so sure I'd be in a hurry to do it again. I mean, with another dog....can't do it again with this one..... :run:
