I've been a member of a wide variety of organizations over the years. Its been my experience that you get something out of membership only to the extent that you put something in...

Very true Brad. I, unfortunately don't get to go to most events put on by the local club because I have so many dogs to care for and they'd usually require an overnight stay for me.

I show, so that takes me away enough. It's not fair for Jacques to be left home all the time, caring for them alone. However, if I get to the point where we're all finished showing, I'll definitely take advantage of those weekends. And...hope to meet you at one of them!

Everyone has been very nice and welcoming to me. I wish I could get away more to spend time and learn more about the working competitions. They sound like so much fun!

Oh and Angela...I also thought maybe Social was from Oregon. That's why I honed in on that particular Lab breeder from Oregon, who's name is Chris (not with a "K" but close enough). That breeder has some write ups in retriever magazines as well.

Not really. I found it very odd that you would put someone's personal business out on the internet on a public forum without getting their permission to do so first. If Kris is a highly qualified Lab breeder, and has the wonderful dogs you say he does...enough to get club member's attention and retriever magazines as well, then I'd guess he doesn't mind the public knowing his name and about his breeding program, but he would probably mind the description of his lifestyle. So IMO, the insensitive one would be you.

Not sure what this means, some of us have jobs.. It doesn't look very friendly though.

I used kris as an example because he is someone I know very well, and as a dog breeder I respect him. This is all the information I am willing to give without his permission.

I just scanned these posts, barley looked at them, I really have nothing more to say. This is an opinion forum and I posted MY opinion. In real America dog club members and memberships mean nothing.

My dog clubs have never been mean to me, or ignored me. I just don't benefit from them. Their information is generic and can be found during any google quest.
So now you may commence hen pecking until it is more then dead. I have said what I came here to say.

REAL AMERICA??? You have no idea where other members of this forum have come from or where we live. You are not the only one informed on what happens outside of breed clubs. To suggest that anyone who is a member of a club is not living in 'real America' is just wrong. Some of us know both sides very well, and still do not agree with your statements. But thats okay, I recognize that opinions are just that, and your entitled to yours, just know, painting everyone with a broad brush is not being honest.

So why are YOU a member of any dog club? You say they are worthless, so then why be a member?

Angela, I've finally met some of the folks with the Columbia River club and they are super nice! I want to join as soon as I'm able to get to their meetings.

Aw Leska..I'm so glad that you are enjoying the membership in one club and considering another. You are absolutely right..new members will eventually be the backbone of the club, and that's why it's so important for them to dig in and learn as much as they can In so many ways, clubs represent the breed on a lot of fronts. It's much easier to showcase the breed when you are working as a group than it is for individuals to do this on their own, and there is legitimacy to group efforts that is difficult to duplicate as an individual. Clubs are often able to put forth a presentaton at dog events..to take part in parades, there are just so many things that can be done by a group...and it can be so much FUN!!!
Since you are Social are in the same area, perhaps you can be instrumental in helping her discover the same things you have about the joys of club membership.

Just so we're clear, that comment wasn't directed at you. You were VERY involved when you were in the CNC. You are still involved with the Ocean City GTG.

Oh Brad, I didn't think it was. I was just throwing it out there. I would LOVE to have kennel help. (Even tho I don't have a kennel....hmmm....perhaps that should just be "a dog nanny") And we do plan on being back in the ring soon. Cole needs to finish his GCH (has only shown twice this year), and next year we'll get Frankie out and about.

Hmmm...I didn't know that you could gain friendly get togethers, hands on training and assistance, camaraderie, mentors, networking, brainstorming get togethers, and all those other "social" things from a Google quest.

Lol...we don't really have a newf club around here, but there is a small group of us that hang out. Mostly, I get help grooming, new recipies, and some gooooood wine Once in a while we get together and make some newfie bibs. I'm lucky to have two very good life lines that (gasp!) often think quite differently about certain topics. I love it. It gives me two sides to a question and leaves me room to make up my own damn mind

Anyhow, they are both NCC/CKC/AKC/NCA. And I'm trying to convince Newf Friends to expand this far north *wink**wink*...we each do things our own way and as a whole we are much better for it.

NO purebred dog breeder should live on an "island" and any breeder who is really concerned for the breed will ONLY be in it to improve the breed in all ways. They will be a member of their breed club and will be showing their dogs and doing all the health clearances available before considering breeding any dog, Period! How in the world can a breeder know what is right if they are only looking at their own dogs?! In a breed club and through showing conformation they will not only gain valuable and current information but they will have access to dogs from all over the world. And don't tell me judges only pick handlers or so called "typy" show newfs as I have an AKC Champion of each "kind" and show them myself and they both win and they both lose. If a breeder is not 100% passionate about what they do and not willing to listen to the experiance of others, and do everything right, then they are only in it for the money, and yes, big red flag!

Evaluating a Newf Breeders Web Site

I joined Newf.net to research the breed and find a breeder. I came across a site Teddy Bear Newfs or teddybearnewfs.com. I think they are here in WA State but they state that they are UKC registered? They don't list anything about health testing or shows or water works etc. They kind of seem like a back yard breeder or puppy mill. Has anyone heard anything about them?
