Going on my first Vacation without my Newf

At the end of this month I'll be leaving for 2 weeks to Mexico. I've never been and I know I'll have a great time but know I'm going to miss Misiu so much. Sometimes if I'm working a really late shift at the Bar my sister takes her so I can sleep in the next morning. On those nights when I get home, expecting my very loud and excited welcome home, and it's quiet I just feel a huge loss. How am I going to make it 2 weeks without that crazy, jumping, whining, leaning welcome home that I hate... but secretly love?

I think that I really need to hear some experienced vacation stories from all you NN.

thx

We have never had a vacation without our dog....Grace our dalmation went everywhere with us....we snucked her into several hotels. And now I take Tank everywhere too. I have only left her home once for an hour and a half. I am eager to hear what others have to say since we are taking a sailboat vacation this summer and leaving Tank with a friend....her BFF, Miko. I am still trying to convince my husband that I can potty train her to pee on that fake grass they advertise for puppy potty training and take her with us. :) He thinks she will be too hot.

Don't take vacations without the dogs,
years ago went to CA, left Mickey with my cousin, they also have the same type of dog, he had a good time, they loved having him; now either the dogs go, or me or my wife goes; I'm going to CA in January, my wife will stay home with the animals. We also have parrots.

I guess I'm the bad parent... we vacation twice a year without the dogs. I miss them terribly, but we go places that I love which helps. Plus, the dogs stay at home with a woman we are very close to. They get so excited to see her, that I know they are fine without me. We call her the dog's Auntie... and she treats them as if they were her own. That helps tremendously as I know they are loved and comfortable and happy while I'm gone.

By the way, we've done Mexico twice (stayed at the Iberostar Grand Paraiso once and Secrets Maroma once... going again next year and staying at the Valentin Imperial). Where in Mexico are you going? you'll love it, the water and the beaches and the relaxation... sigh!

Sorry same here, hubby gave up on a vacation away from the dogs after we got Apache. They are fine, but I'm the one with the problem. Can't have a good time if they aren't with me.

We go on vacation to Cuba every year and have a wonderful petsitter the girls just love him and he is so good with them. I fully trust him probably more than my own family. I get him to send an e-mail to the hotel and let me know how they are maybe you could do that and then you could relax and have a good time. I really miss mine but I know they are in good hands.

We have a pet sitter that lives at the house while we are away. And I call every day to "speak" to the dogs. I make her put me on speaker phone. Yes, I'm that dog owner.

Vacation... haven't done that in years. When we did go to Florida, Chance and Chelsea stayed at a boarding facility run by a great woman who was part of Newf Rescue. That made me feel so much better. They got to stay in a big kennel together. I called alot because I was so worried about Chelsea having any seizures, luckily everything went fine.

We have people offer to watch our dogs and live in our house while we are gone ( I think the reason may be the house and the lake, not the dogs lol), but we never go without them. If they can't go, we don't go. We traveled extensively in the past and got it out of our system. Now there is no place I would rather visit than right where I am.
The only time we are without them and someone stays with them is if Jack is in the hospital, but then we don't have a choice

Luckily, we are not well traveled. The farthest we go is Disney World, and my ex-husband always dog sat for me. Not that I trusted him that much, but I knew my lab was smarter than him, and could take care of herself. Every time she got there she immediately went to the bathroom in the middle of his driveway, and then walked into the house and threw up on the carpet. Every time. We never figured out why, but he swore she did it for spite. We called every day to "talk" to her, and sent her postcards.

I have no inkling as to what we'll do with Maggie when we go next year, I'm already stressing about it and it's a year away.

We have the same arrangement however the petsitter call us every night to let us know things are OK.

Like I said in my earlier post, we don't travel anymore,, but when I have to be away when Jack is in the hospital I use the live cam. We set up a streaming cam so when I am at the hospital I can get out my laptop and that allows me to see and hear them. It's cute to watch their reaction when I am on the phone calling to check on them. Our sitter will put us on speaker.
It gives me more peace of mind to be able to look at them and see if they are stressed or behaving.

Oh, we haven't had non-newf vacations in ages.. :). Hope you enjoy your time in Mexico, don't worry about your newfie, i think they'll enjoy their time as much as you enjoy your time away :).

I try desperately to take my pups everywhere with me, but over the Christmas holiday we're going overseas for 2 weeks to visit Ben's parents and they can't come. I HATE leaving them. They're having to stay at a kennel and that just makes it worse. I just wish there was someone who could watch them for me instead of having them outside of a home situation with people to really pay attention to them. What makes it so hard is that you can't explain to them that it's temporary and that you're coming back to get them as soon as you can and that you'll miss them terribly.

Wow! That was hilarious. Good to know there are so many of "those dog people here".
Misiu is staying with Auntie Taai at her best friend Bella's house. We stayed there this summer when we dog sat Bella (sheppard 2 years), Tarrot (sheppard mastiff 8 years) for two weeks. Misiu had a blast. My friend and her husband have very simular training as I do and I trust them entirely so that makes it easier. I think I'm going to see if she will send me nightly updates online with photos. I don't want to miss out on all the crazy trouble those two get into. They have white carpets in the living room. HAHAHA. Oh they are in for a big wet Newf treat.

Ths for all the great ideas and for making me feel like I'm not a big dork for missing my dog.

I must be a bad parent too...we went to Punta Cana in August for 8 days and had a dog sitter come and live in. She was great - took them to the park every day and they loved her. The resort we were at had computers in the lobby that we could use for 20 minutes a day. So, every day I would email the dog sitter and she would reply by the next day. It was very reassuring to know what was happening at home and we had an awesome time...are going back this December.

we bought a 26 foot long touring caravan with an L shaped lounge area so the dogs have more room. The dogs always come with us so far but I know if we can ever afford a holiday my next door neighbours are itching to look after the dogs as they lost theirs 2 years ago and always dogsit for us.
