Gentle Giants?

I think they forgot the gentle giant gene when they made Leroy. He is so not a gentle giant. Everytime we play some part of my body gets hurt. Like today for instance we were outside playing and he punched me in the face, seriously he jumped up and punched me in the cheek. Then tonight we were playing again and he gave me a fat lip. Last week it was a fractured thumb, the week before that a bloody nose, before that a black eye, chipped tooth and countless fat lips before that. Granted he is only 19 months but really? I know he doesn't mean to do it and is just playing, he is just such a clutz! Sherman and I play all the time, but he has never made me bleed, bruise, or break anything. Maybe I should start wearing protective gear when I play with Leroy. :darn:

Hey Jen I'm sorry but I'm laughing at your post though it's not funny to have a fat lip or black eye. Seems to me you're in the way. My Sherman is the klutz here. He is always knocking me with his head or stepping on my toes or bowling me over in the yard. Funny how that sometimes happens. I know he doesn't mean to he's just a big goofy newfie who doesn't know his size and he's not all that large either. Sherman turned 2 this past Nov. Still I feel for you.

I can sympathize!

Hugo dislocated my knee once when I was wearing my wetsuit and at the lake. He took a shine to a Leonberger girl, wrapped the leash around my leg and POP! By the time I drove myself home, I could hardly walk. Getting the wetsuit off was interesting. Then I had to figure out how I was going to walk three Newfs to their dog yard several times each day. Had to use a cane and take each one out separately and walk really slow. I don't think anything has ever hurt as much as that knee did. Took at least a week or two before the pain went away. It was a good year before I could run easily and I was showing Piper at the time. Somehow, I managed. Ah the joys of being single and having multiple large dogs!

The dog door and new fencing up to the house, that I got a few years later, has been a godsend.

Wash is also a complete klutz when playing. I have gotten socked in the face quite a few times by his giant feets. I still consider him gentle though, he always stops right away, and he is always very sorry when he accidently does something like that.

Ashton swears Maggie tried to kill her last night in the snow. She built something of a fort ( really she just dug out some snow and made a path ) and was sitting in it when Maggie jumped over her, and pushed her face forward, into the snow. And then kept jumping on her. So 80+ pounds was holding her face down in the snow.

All I saw at the back door was a crying kid with snow from the top of her head to her stomach, and a pitiful looking puppy laying in the snow, who couldn't figure out why her friend didn't want to play anymore.

Ashton seemed to think it was a plot Maggie had devised so as to not have to share any more apples.

That was me the other day!!!We were outside running in the snow and I fell, Leroy stood over me pecking at the back of my head, I was laughing so hard I couldn't turn over to push him off me! It wasn't until my 5 year old daughter came out to distract him that he finally retreated. I think he was laughing a bit too.

Zoe has little respect for what's in between point A and B, as long as there's some fun at point B! :)

Black eyes, swollen lips, thought a cheek was fractured. Oh, yeah; before I put up the fence, he wrapped his long lead around my ankles and pulled my feet out from under me... All the breath knocked out of me, I didn't think I'd be able to breath again. But he was a puppy...
Gentle? Sure... When? ;)

River semi-punctured my eye with her tooth. I was above her, and when hubby called her she jumped up, mouth open, canine right into my eye and 'pop'! Luckily eyes heal fast, and it wasn't too bad, but the white part of my eye was really bruised up. I felt like I was going to pass out. Otherwise just random bruises from collisions where I was in the way. Is it just me or do they have the hardest heads in the world?

ah yes newfy abuse

its a regular thing here too though we are careful not to let Beau get too overexcited especially after he caught Malc with his tooth while playing.

We set ground rules Beau knows he cant use the same amount of force with me though I still end up with some colourful bruises . Too overexcited and play is curbed until it is at an acceptable level

I don't think Tiki will ever play gentle, Merlin, on the other hand is the poster boy for the gentle, laid back newf.

Oh I forgot!!

I stepped in her little heart shaped bowl and slipped,( that she grew out of in like a week ) hit my hand on the counter top and then landed on it and fractured my thumb. Slipped in a big 'ol puddle of water on the kitchen floor and bruised my knee, and when our fence fell down, got her 20 foot leash wrapped around my ankle and got rope-burn so bad I swear you could see bone.

Ok, maybe that all was my fault.

Compared to what some of you wrote I have gotten off pretty easy so far. Some of these things made me cringe when I read them! Hope everyone stays injury free for a few days!

Years ago, one of my dobe's rope burned three fingers on my right hand almost to the bone. That cured me of using ropes for leashes after that! And he was only 75 lbs!!!!

Also, I made the mistake of wrapping my fingers in a leash handle once. Hugo bolted to go see the neighbor and my middle finger got trapped. I thought it was going to be literally pulled off my hand!

God I love dogs!!!:kiss::kiss::kiss::kiss: Life is so much more interesting.
