General Question and discussion

Henrys Mom

New member
Mason is my second Newf and nothing like Henry was! I am just looking for some advice and discussion. Mason just turned one and is very skinny. He eats a lot...was 6 cups a day and I have now changed it to 7-8 cups a day. This is so strange to me because Henry never ate too much and if he did he immediately gained weight! Mason only weighs about 110. Is that a good weight for a one year old? I think growing slow is good and staying this is good, I just don't want him to be too thin!

Mason hates to be groomed! He hates to be washed, hates to be brushed, hates to be dried! He tries to bite the brush and goes crazy about being groomed. Any advice or suggestions? I have heard peanut butter. I guess that would require one person to hold the peanut butter distraction and one person brush?

Mason is quite a handful and always has been! I am hoping he calms down a bit! He knows his commands and has been to obedience school, but chooses not to listen most of the time! He chases the cat, he jumps on the counters, he goes crazy over people who wear black socks! I try to do the NILIF method. I think we are both a work in progress! Henry spoiled me! He was the perfect most laid back Newf!

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same things!

Sounds like you have your hands full. :) Oliver used to try and chew on me and the brush when I would groom him. Try giving him something to chew on while you groom him ie beef stick or a pigs ear etc.

Or your hand. That's what I do most of the time. It's super easy to groom a Newf with one hand down it's gaping pie-hole :banghead:

Sallie, sorry you are having these problems. Have you tried a kong filled with peanut butter while brushing..that may work . Cash LOVES to be bathed and brushed..but we have a problem with him and the dryer. He will bite at the air coming out of the hose . I don't think he hates the dryer.. it's more of a playful thing. He will even do it if I am drying the other dogs. What works for Cash is the lemon. I hold the lemon squeeze thing in one hand near his face and hold the blower with the other hand. If he tries to bite the air..i squirt him in his mouth. It really works well. He is SOOO much better when I have that!!!!! Maybe something like that would also work with Mason.. Good luck!!!!
Also, as far as size. I think Bruce was only about 110 at a year. He's just a smaller male. He is now 3 and 127 so still on the small side. He never ate more than 4 cups though. Have you had a stool sample checked recently..maybe Mason has worms.

I used the tips from the Newfoundland book everyone here recommended. When Darwin tried to nip at me when I brush him, I tapped him on the nose. I did not stop what I was doing, though. He was extremely verbal about his dislike--snarling at me. I had to make a decision that I was going to win the argument. I kept putting him in a sit, speaking nicely to him, and brushing. Every time he would settle down, relax, and let me brush him for a few minutes, I would praise him, and release him from being groomed. Then I'd come back an hour or so later and repeat. After I got him to stop hating it, I taught him to stand up while I brush him. By the time we started taking him to the local self-wash dog wash, he just did what he was told. Now, every time I go to the bathroom, he just climbs in the bathtub, and hangs out. If he finds the rake laying around somewhere, he will bring it to me, and stand nicely to be groomed! It does get better!

At one point, Darwin was eating 6-7 cups a day of Orijen 6 fish. He got really boney and sickly looking, because I was afraid to overfeed him. I think he was 110 around a year old, though. Every dog grows at their own pace. Try to follow his rib feel, and dont worry about where other dogs were in a given age range. Now, at 19 months, he eats a breakfast of 3 cups, and a dinner of 2 cups. We just upped him a bit, because he's feeling pretty boney.

Lol! I'm laughing with you, because Maggie will suck on my hand while I groom her. And I use the term "groom" loosely. It's more of a wrestling match. She kicks me, hits me, bites me, bites the brush, and will randomly try to smother me with kisses. I have to wait until she tires herself out. It's totally my fault, but she *hates* to be groomed.

Sometimes a groomer may be able to get the grooming done because your not there , people have told me that dogs always behave better when the owners aren't there

What food are you feeding, Sallie? His weight is not bad for his age. He will fill out. As far as the grooming goes, you can get him used to being brushed by brushing him while he is eating his dinner. He will associate it with his dinner and it should transfer over to other times. You can hold a spoonful of peanut butter with one hand and the dryer hose with the other one. You have to leash him to a deck pole or garage pole so you have another hand. Dry him from the back and try to avoid his head until he gets used to it. The rest is behavioral that you will have to work with.

Ok, I know my Misha is just a baby but... I trim nails once a week, just take the tip off and we're done. I can usually do this while Misha is sleeping but last night she was a wiggle worm. I smeared peanut butter on hubby's hand. Worked great :) She uses her paws way too much for a kong to work in the nail situation..

Ok so Abbey and Mason must be related. Abbey is 7 months now but she too is much different then my first Newf Cleo who I think spoiled me too.

Peanut Butter is Abbey's crack she goes crazy over it so, when I brush her I give her a bone I stuff with peanut butter, if I plan ahead I freeze the bone, then I can brush her a whole 5 min longer. Also I have bathed her in my shower and put PB on the wall which she licked off and had no idea what I was doing. About 2 months ago Abbey went to the groomer for the first time and I was so worried about how mouthy she can be with me, that I warned the groomer, took special treats and said if you can't do it it is ok. Well surprise surprise little Miss Abbey was a dream for the groomer to work with.

Abbey jumps on everything. This morning I was sitting on my bed butting my shoes on and she but her front paws up on the bed and hit my in my eye with her nose. Well I thought no big deal went to work. Can you all see this coming? Yes I have a black eye

We too do the NILIF but I have to admit sometimes I forget, especially when she looks at me with those big brown eyes and I melt, because she gives the best HUGS.

we use a plastic bottle filled with treats or a toilet roll holder to distract him from grooming.

we also used massage techniques to help him get used to being touched

Here Morgan only has a cow if I try to trim her nails. Yep she'll chew on a helpers hand or toy and pull her foot away. We did it last night and had her laying down instead of on her grooming table. Success as far as I'm concerned!!
Put peanut butter on a post, etc which he's tied to and brush while he's occupied with it. Will take time to get him used to it. Morgans almost 2 and will only behave on her table. Slowly brushing her in the house a little here and there so she will pass her test in the spring.
Such brats they can be sometimes!
