Foster Newf Dakota

Well we are foster parents again. We picked up a recently neutered 14 month old malemale 14 month old Landseer on Sunday evening. He just got snipped. He is a complete wild child with no manners whatsoever. On the ride home about 30 miles I was nervous that he was going to jump in the front seat. He was everywhere in my SUV. It was kind of funny because I did a home inspection earlier on Sunday on behalf of Nor Cal Newf Rescue and the family asked if they needed a gate in between the cargo unit and the back seat. I told them no, we had not had any issues. Well let me tell you I wished that I had one on Sunday. Dakota came with some tiny useless choke collar and leash. I told the DH to get me the larger link choke collar. It really didn't make much of an impression either. The first night was pretty interesting. Dakota was trying to "mount" everything in site including my husband. It was crazy. He was everywhere checking things out. He attempted to get all over the furniture. I looked up at one point and he had all fours on my brand new dining room bench seat. I think in his previous home he ruled the roost. Does the dog Beethoven come to mind? That is exactly what we were thinking. By the way the vet that snipped him said to keep him calm. No tranquilizers were provided. GEEZ.

I took him to the vet yesterday to have a bandage changed (he had a little growth on his paw that was removed) and that was another experience. Dakota was dragging me all over the place from the door from my house to the back of the SUV and from the SUV into the vet’s office. We are talking 15 feet here. I hardly had any control over that boy. So last night I decided to see if the pinch collar that we had would fit him. Ended up taking him on a walk with the pinch collar and it worked like a charm. It was like night and day. I thought it was pretty slick considering that I have never used a pinch collar before.

Dakota seems to be settling right in and learning what is acceptable in our home (somewhat). We are trying to be very very consistent with him. I was a bit worried initially and now I am ok. He is a big ole goof and knuckle head. All in all he is very sweet he just doesn't have any manners.

On a fantastic note Dakota and Noche get along great. I think that Noche really likes boys.

That's so nice that you are fostering again I know how tough it can be. Maybe Noche would like a brother :)

Sounds a little like the Rescue Patti and I picked up Saturday. Misty was good in the car but had a melt down when we left her for a few moments. She managed to bust out of a crate. No leash manners.. First thing that came to mind is this girl needs a pinch collar.
She is at her foster home (they are miracle workers) now though and doing well. She is a sweet girl.. Just needs some lovin and manners.
Sounds like your boy.. Well Done for fostering this guy. !!!!! :hugs:

Glad to hear he is settling down for you. Can we see pics of the wild child if you can get him to sit still? :) We love pics .

Thanks for taking the time to take them into foster.

As I was reading this I kept thinking "prong collar" Glad it worked for you

A good way to secure a dog is to shut the leash in the door. I believe it is called a 'rescue tie'. At least he will not be able to jump in the front and cause an accident.

Thank you for fostering him. He sounds like a challenge but is definitely getting the guidance he needs.

Glad you are looking after him and teaching some manners. Keeping them out of the front seat can be a real challenge. My attempts with the Rhodey have led to a really bad right shoulder. The tip of putting the leash in the door will be tried. Looking forward to pictures of the big gallump.
