Grady came to our family back in November of 09, he was an owner surrender to a kill shelter over in Mississippi. He was 6.5 yrs old and kept outside is all we knew. That was a 3.5 hr drive to get him, which we did with anticipation and some fear. Definitely a Newf, very happy seeming dog, a bit addled seeming at times but we got him home and took a few hours to clean him up as he'd probably not seen a brush or bath in over a year.
He met our two other Newfies, Sophie and Bava on neutral territory and everyone got along great. He went with us and the other two on outings to the beach, the lake in our neighborhood, Lowes, Petsmart, etc etc. 6 months of love and affection and he became a new dog. A happy dog who learned hands are for soothing, petting and scratching, leashes are for walks and going places, a couch is for a dog to get up on to sleep with a person or by himself and car rides meant biscuits and hamburgers...
The last two weeks he was stiff, then had great difficulty moving. We started him on Metacam, then moved to Prednisone at the suggestion of our vet and he had several great days. We started to have hope that his hind end problems had ended or gotten to a more manageable point.
Unfortunately, on Memorial Day, he started having Grand Mal Seizures while we were out and they continued. Our vet came to our home and helped him pass.
I'll never forget what a great 6 months we had having him in our lives. He never asked for anything other than to go out to do a business and for scratches and hugs....
This was a picture my hubby shot of Grady and me after Grady had climbed up on the couch and leaned into me, then just melted This is how I like to remember him....
