Do they all use their paws so much?

Tug is very 'Handy'; I check his paws regularly cuz I KNOW there's an opposable digit in there SOMEwhere!!!
He'll drag out a toy using his paw, place it between his paws and hold it, try and get lids off with 'the paw'. He'd open the door if I let him...

It is really interesting to see that Finn is not alone on this. He often bats things with his paws, us,dogs, the cat, toys, food. And he has such MASSIVE paws!!!!

Paws down with our "Chloe", and she means business....hehe. She'll give me the paw when I have stopped rubbing or petting her...I think she's saying "you better not stop with the rub, you hear"???

Yes, "The Paw". I learned quick that if was not out of bed before the little devil woke up, he would tenderly stroke my face with his paws. I went through a lot of antibiotic cream until I learned my lesson.

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm interested to know why this breed would have a predisposition to using their paws more so than other breeds. After watching lots of newf videos and watching Hera play, it appears that way to me. When she and Jake play, she rears up like a cat and bats at him with both paws. She also likes to pounce like a cat with both paws out to pin whatever she's after.
Funny this should come up. I asked this very question last weekend at the River King water test. The lady I asked is very knowledgeable in the breed, and the history of the breed. She told me that she actually asked the same question of a friend, and here is the answer: (Keep in mind that it's kind of an "Old Wives Tale", but it makes sense)

It's called the "Fisher Paw". Way back when, it is claimed that it's the paw that Newfies used to catch fish. They would use that paw to hold the fish down so they could pick it up with their mouth.

I always thought Ebony was one of the most hands-on dogs ever...until Ross came home! He paws much more than Ebony! And he sure isn't a Newf!

Isn't that the way bears do it?
