Do they all use their paws so much?

Finn will often come and hit us with his paw when he wants something but he uses his paw more than any other dog I have owned. He will go up to other dogs and pat them with his paw and he is fascinated by our cat and tries to stop him running away by putting a giant paw on him.
Here he is trying to get Ali's attention

Is it a Newf thing?

Tsunami doesn't do thing with his paws but "hold" things. Typhoon will use his paws whenever he can. He even uses them during tug of war... Poor Tsunami doesn't know what to do when Ty puts his paw in the middle of the rope.

Luci does that when she is playing Tug-of-war too! I had never had a dog who put her ALL into it the way she does! She uses those big ol' legs/paws to her advantage!!! And teaching the 'give me a paw' was the easiest of ANY dog.....I honestly do not even think I HAD to teach her - she just always did it - just had to put the words to the movement - lol!

I think ours are part raccoon - they use their paws like hands to hold any and everything! Part of "retrieve" is "smack it down with the paw" first and then pick up with the mouth! :icon_bb:

Maddie uses her paws to get our and the other dogs' attention. Usually she bats one of us with her paw when she wants us. She also uses her paws to keep the puppy under control. When Vandy gets a little crazy, a big paw comes down on her, in slow motion, and pins her to the floor.
Both the Labs, Vandy and Bogie, uses their paws to hold bones. Maddies doesn't do that as much.

Finny uses his paws as hands and he likes to paw everything too. Nothing like a big ole newfy paw coming at ya. Poor Daisy doesn't know what hit her!! LOL...

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm interested to know why this breed would have a predisposition to using their paws more so than other breeds. After watching lots of newf videos and watching Hera play, it appears that way to me. When she and Jake play, she rears up like a cat and bats at him with both paws. She also likes to pounce like a cat with both paws out to pin whatever she's after.

Too funny - Magnum also "pounces" ... all four feet up in the air and then back down - usually on his brother!

Same here. Thule likes to hold onto things with her paws, as much as she can... no thumbs!

She uses them to let me know when it's time to serve miss queen bee too....

Remington and Storm both use their paws alot. They use it for attention and playing. If you don't get up fast enough in the morning, you get a paw in the face! The newfs my family had when I was growing up always pawed as well. I think it's a breed characteristic.

Nigel is the Paw Man over here, he's always batting Emma on the head when he wants to play, but my favorite thing he does is when he lies on his side and takes both front paws and he gets both paws going as if he's digging or something, so endearing, especially when he's doing it on his snout almost like he's trying to get something off his nose but he does it so calmly-he likes to play with his paws, too, reminds me of a baby who finds their hands and has them in their mouth.......adorable!

Its funny - Luci 'stalks' her toys & bones like a cat....I have never had a dog do that before....not like this!! it is sooo cool to watch - and then when she gets really close to it - she hesitates for a moment then LEAPS in the air and pounces on it! Everyone gets such a kick out of it!

She is so much fun.....she amuses me ALL day long!

Brody is a huge paw user. I love it when he gets something new because he does this cute little paw dance.

I have a red lines on my thigh because Brody tried to play when I was brushing him.

Dani is VERY "paw oriented". She smacks at toys like cats do....and paws at us for everything. She even opens doors with them. Turner and Journey.....not so much.

Funny, my husband has made the same observation. He said he has never seen a dog use their paws like hands as much as Nani. He was also wondering if it was the breed. Nani paws the cats....paws at toys.....paws at Kylee....paws at us....red marks & scratches galore... :)
